I understand that the youma are the bad guys, but are they all generic soldier characters, or do they have individual names? Also, are the youma like "grunts" in that they'd be unlikely to have any special powers?

you need to differenciate the various youmas. Some of us have names others don't. Roles are up to FF. as in the series all youmas by definition have a power even though they are the grunts of the army.
