Sorry for all the Canada posts but I'm really proud of my country. Anyways on topic I was watching CBC and something amazing got reported.

An A-hole in Nova Scotia and his brother got together went down to a black mans house and lit a cross on fire in his front lawn. The man called the RCMP and the mounties responding they tracked the man and his brother down and arrested them.

Origionally the two were charged with criminal harrasment.  But then the Judges decided they wanted to send a strong message to racist pricks every where.So now he was just charged with carrying out a hate crime. He is going to serve up to twelve years in prison for his actions.

On the CBC a Canadian Government politician stated the Government and courts want to send a strong message that racist actions will not be tolerated in our country. lol if only America did this all the KKK assholes would be behind bars.

What you think isn't this great or what?

Well criminal harrasment is a sentence of up to ten years. A hate crime adds another 2-years to that sentence. Personally I don't think its too heavy. I mean yes its one bad decision but so is murder and other crimes like assualt.

Plus with such a hefty sentence its going to prevent any prick from doing this again and if someone does it shows Canada has no tollerance for racism.

I like the fact that I live in a multicultural country where all people of all races and religions can live free of fear of racist pricks.

Ha-ha! That showed them! Though I agree 12 years seems rather harsh. Then again, knowing today's system, they'll probably get out within a few years, anyway.

As if KKK and cross burnings were a huge problem.

These kind of efforts should be concentrated elsewhere, where the real problems are.

A 12 year sentence in Canada means the man will (probably) be out of prison in a couple of years ...

Personally, as a Canadian, I think hate-crime laws are garbage. People who commit crimes should be guilty of the crimes the committed, not based on the faulty thought processes that led to them committing the crime.

12 years wtf? Pretty sure that's about the same as rape. Don't think that's fair but whatever.

I honestly don't think there should be "hate crimes" at all, a crime is a crime is a crime as far as I'm concerned doesn't matter if a white guy did it to a black guy or a black guy did it to a white guy (in which case it wouldn't be considered racist btw, but that's for another discussion)

I think for such a "crime" you wouldn't even get sentenced to prison here in Germany.
