Which American presidents do you guys think did the best job of being an elder statesman?

The usual response is Lincoln at #1.  Also, Washington, Roosevelt, Reagan and JFK are thought highly of.

Lincoln had to navigate the country through a lot of crap, and he did it well.  He surrounded himself with both allies and political enemies in his cabinet to hear all sides of arguments rather than going in blind.  He was a clear and succint orator, getting his point across very effectively.  He had to reunite the union in one of it's darkest times.  And he succeeded.

Lincoln never was an elder statesman. He died before he could be

Bill Clinton seems to have become quite popular after his presidency. Same with Reagan.

Haha but he was ex-president!

No way is Clinton held in higher esteem than Lincoln.  Especially not after impeachment debacle.  He has a fun personality, which attracts people.  But definitely not the best.

James Polk.

Jacksonian Democrat without the asshole policies of Jackson. Managed to negotiate the Northwest with Britain as well improve trade with them (through the Walker Tariff). Also started the Mexican-American War and secured California and Texas (our two most important states today), as well as Arizona and New Mexico. Almost got us Cuba too.

Clinton and Reagan are popular because both presidents had ridiculous job growth during their presidencies, albeit through different causes.

Didn't he also have the possibility of just taking over all of Mexico?  Was that his term?  Also Lincoln is still considered better.  Civil War, peoplez!

Yeah, Lincoln did a great job being an Ex president... in his casket.

I'm pretty sure he means best as in "Did the most good after being president."

I'd say Jimmy Carter myself.  Soley because I don't know much about ex presidents before that.

Theodore Roosevelet was pretty cool too... but i may be biased seeing as he's my favorite president... and what i'd look for in a politician today.   Well outside of the whole "going to war just for young men to be abe to say they went" philosphy.

We need to get back to Fair Deal policies.
