He surrounded himself with both allies and political enemies in his cabinet to hear all sides of arguments rather than going in blind. He was a clear and succint orator, getting his point across very effectively. He had to reunite the union in one of it's darkest times. And he succeeded. |
Lincoln never was an elder statesman. He died before he could be 
Bill Clinton seems to have become quite popular after his presidency. Same with Reagan.
