Lincoln had to navigate the country through a lot of crap, and he did it well.  He surrounded himself with both allies and political enemies in his cabinet to hear all sides of arguments rather than going in blind.  He was a clear and succint orator, getting his point across very effectively.  He had to reunite the union in one of it's darkest times.  And he succeeded.

Lincoln never was an elder statesman. He died before he could be

Bill Clinton seems to have become quite popular after his presidency. Same with Reagan.
