Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft: XBL Increase Covers Exclusive Map Packs and Games

At this point I think MS need to start blaming piracy like Sony.

GT delayed, blame piracy!!

remove other os, blame piracy!!

remove usb functionality of non licensed device, blame piracy!!

MS could easily say that the price is higher due to... fighting piracy!! And people would eat it up

It has always been stated that XBL Gold money was used for their expensive network expansion. Nothing is new here.

Paying Activision to not release map packs on PC/PS3 = expensive network expansion?

So is that what Sony uses the PS Plus money for given the recent DLC exclusivity for them too?

I was talking about the majority of their cost structure not some bones they throw every now and then...

Tease.

ESPN itself is worth the money.

of course this stands true until PS3 gets ESPN for free.

Too bad that ESPN will only be for PSN members.

I am one of the 1 million that pre-ordered Halo: Reach...Are you?

I think fightning over which console is better is stupid, they are both good consoles with some ups and downs.

I thought hit and run link posting wasn't allowed here. Can't say I'm too shocked that this rule is ignored here though.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

Microsoft charges XBOX Live members X amount of money, and uses some amount of that money to fund exclusive deals for...you got it, XBOX LIve members.  So basically they are reinvesting revenue in thier own service.

TRULY Microsoft is the devil.

I mean really, REALLY, this is what people are complaining about?

So you are paying more money...so that you can have the opportunity to pay for more content?

The exclusivity deals that Microsoft negotiate do indeed benefits XBL customers. However, I haven't seen evidence that these deals result in getting content (map packs) that wouldn't have otherwise been produced, nor have I seen evidence that they are getting it sooner than they would have if no deal had taken place. What is happening is Microsoft is making deals in order to withheld content from other platforms, namely PS3, in order to make their console and that version of the game more attractive. Sony is guilty of this same sort of underhanded behaviour.

I'm sure there are exceptions, but typically when MS or Sony do this it's to make the competition appear worse to make themselves appear better.

I prefer not to have the cost increase, but this is the first price increase since LIVE's inception, I believe. I was surprised how long it took then to raise it. The improvements to the service and dashboard are always welcomed, and the slight increase in cost is disappointing but not backbreaking.  I'm sure you will still be able to pick it up for around $30-$40 dollars from various deals during the year. I still expect to pay only around $3.00 a month for the service.

The exclusivity reason for the price increase is lame, we know the price increase is due to additional cost and improvements to LIVE. They added more and wanted to keep the same profit margin or gain some if possible. I think ESPN has a lot to do with it. Too bad they didn't make it tier based so you do not need to pay for the options you do not want/need.

I think this sums it up perfectly.

That is a completely different argument though, and one I may even be inclined to agree with you on.

But that is not what is being discussed in this thread.

I wish the best of luck to MS and Xbox but personally I'm cheap (and my friends are on PSN) so I choose PSN cos it's free.

It's amazing though how Xbox Live can have so many subscribers. Microsoft really succeeded this gen.
