The exclusivity deals that Microsoft negotiate do indeed benefits XBL customers. However, I haven't seen evidence that these deals result in getting content that wouldn't have otherwise been produced, nor have I seen evidence that they are getting it sooner than they would have if no deal had taken place. What is happening is Microsoft is making deals in order to withheld content from other platforms, namely PS3, in order to make their console and that version of the game more attractive. Sony is guilty of this same sort of underhanded behaviour.

I'm sure there are exceptions, but typically when MS or Sony do this it's to make the competition appear worse to make themselves appear better.

That is a completely different argument though, and one I may even be inclined to agree with you on.

But that is not what is being discussed in this thread.
