Forums - Gaming - ERSB Broken

I wish the government would stop trying to find more ways to "protect" us from ourselves.  The ESRB, just like the MPAA before it, is doing a great job with ratings.  However, it's the child's parents who are responsible in the end to use those ratings to purchase the right games for their child.

Besides, I've been playing M games since I was 13, and I'm perfectly fine.  Of course, I go out and commit the occasional murder.  But hey, who doesn't?

It's the parents decision to let their kids play M rated games, not anybody else.

This law is against our 1st amendment rights and should not be tolerated by anyone.  I've said this before and I'll say it again, it doesn't matter if you're over 18 and don't care about the law.  If this passes, US citizens are allowing the government to take our rights and should not  be considered acceptable.

The government should impose the law saying "It should be up to the parents" is just wrong on so many levels.  There are a ton of irresponsible parents in this world, are you saying the government shouldn't intervene?

Government intervenes tons in the life of children.  Think about all the children taken away from bad homes, etc.

Hear about this latest story of the mother who was getting her 1, 4 and 6 year olds high on marijuana?  Anyone who says it is up to the parents on video games obviously must agree with that mother then?

If you say no to that but yes to the video game thing - what is your reasoning?   Both things can hard a child.

Some people are just too stupid to have kids.  The quote I like is you need to have a license to have a dog but any idiot can have a kid.

Pot is illegal, so no, I don't agree with the mother.

I understand what your saying and I agree with you that many parents suck and it would be nice to hold them accountable for being crappy parents.  But, in order to hold parents accountable you have to give up some of your rights.  Just because you agree with what a new law is trying to accomplish, you should never be willing to give up your rights.

Look at the warrant-less wire taps that the Bush administration enacted after 9/11.  I agree with what they were trying to accomplish but in order for them to accomplish their goal, I had to give up my right to privacy.  That is not acceptable and should have been hated by all Americans because that gives the government the power to invade our privacy.

Never be willing to give up your rights.

get your mum to buy the games, thats how i got into MA15 movies and get MA15 games here in Australia.

We have had this rule for ages now. Now MA15 isn't as extreme as R18 or 18 in the US so thats really what they should do.

Still everyone gets the games they want because parents get them anyways for there under 15 year old.

I remember my mum getting GTA San Andreas for me and my bothers, oldest around 13-14. And that game got banned in a week. I remember that was the first time i have heard that many F words in under 30 seconds in a game or movie.

Now that i am 19 i dont care. I never understood why the US doesn't have the same system.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

With the possibility of law banning the sale of violent video games to kids being a real possibility could the gaming industry have shot itself in the leg with the standards set by the ERSB

GTAIV rated M should not be played by minors in my opinion by Halo rated M ive played since I was thirteen with all my friends and I believe should is appropriate for thirteen year olds and up

With this law the government will decide what is or is not appropriate for minors and just what they deem unapropriate worries me

What do you think?

Most retailers do an incredible job preventing children from buying M rated games. The problem is mostly parents that walk over and buy the game anyways.

Trust me, its easier for kids to rent R/NC17 movies at Blockbuster or any other movie rental shop then buy an M-rated game at GameStop or Walmart.

Want kids to stop playing M rated games? Have their parents like M rated games and think they are cool because nothing says "lame" to a kid like knowing that they like something their parents like.

All we need is something like http://www.kids-in-mind.com/ but for video games instead of movies.  Objective content details without any moral position or agenda.  Just the facts.  Ya know, for parents.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) is not broken, it is working as intended. Negligent parents are broken and need to be fixed the same way adults who supply alcohol to minors get fixed.

As for the infringement on our 1st Amendment rights, I don't buy it. Anyone can say or write something. Not everyone has the know-how to create a video game by themselves. Second, video games such as GTA are multi-million dollar products created solely to get a return on the investment for the developer and publishers. They are not equivalent to some bum in the commons of a university loudly promoting his views on God and telling students they will go to Hell for fornication.

Finally, video games are not art, they are entertainment played for fun. If you consider it art, then point me to your local video game gallery where I can wear my turtle neck, nice slacks and look at all the video games on the wall while drinking wine and eating cheese.
