Power Gig may end up being another "Rock Revolution" in terms of sales although that particular game was just sub-par on all levels.

The play list is pretty important too. Sounds like Power Gig has a "guitar player's" play list which kind of limits the audience, but who knows? Maybe there are more aspiring guitarists out there who want to use a video game tutor to learn technical songs than some would imagine.

And the guitar controller looks a lot like a junior guitar. At least the Rock Band guitar is a Squire Stratocaster, not that I'd buy a Squire for regular guitar playing, but it's a "real" guitar at least. I'd just rather put the $270 asking price towards a better guitar.

Guitar Rising (which appears to be stillborn) let players use any electric guitar they had to play the game. That would have been ideal.

Remember when Guitar Hero first came out and Lars Ulrich of Metallica stated no Metallica game would ever go onto a game like that and Guitar Hero is not a way to teach guitar? Well, Power Gig seems to be the epitome of his reaction taken to Yngwie Malmsteen proportions for a game that is intended to sell to the mass public, most of whom do not know what a hammer-on is.

Power Gig needs to have a learning mode where the songs progress in difficulty from the easiest "Smoke on the Water" riffs to something as technical as "Stairway to Heaven."  This could start the "Rock Revolution" you refer to. All I am seeing is an awesome set list I can't play and I am butthurt because my wannabe rock star dreams as a kid seem out of reach with a game I would spend two years getting halfway through.

As for guitar brands, I am a lover of the Gibson ES-345 (Resurrecting Freddie King :) ), Fender Stratocaster, and Fender Telecaster.  The Power Gig guitar is another metal guitar that is soulless but looks edgy.

"Rock Revolution" was Konami's answer to Guitar Hero and Rock Band even though Konami actually invented the genre as a Japanese arcade game long before Guitar Hero 1 (Guitar Freaks 1999, Guitar Hero 1 2005).

But Rock Revolution is an actual game. And it was completely eclipsed by both Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Which is what may end up happening to Power Gig.

The Power Gig guitar is made out of plastic and it looks smaller than even a Gibson SG, making it seem even more toy-like, guitar strings and pick ups aside. I just couldn't see myself ever using it as anything other than a controller.

Either way, I'm passing, even as someone who would use it to learn some cover tunes.

And sure, I wouldn't mind using an ES-335 or 330 to learn, but realistically would settle for a Casino, Sheraton or Riviera since I'm not a musician and will probably never spend more than $2k on a guitar. What I own is a standard Fender Strat and a Rickenbacker 4003.

You don't play the real guitar parts in power gig though, from what I've seen you play the normal five button  gameplay on a real guitar, which would suck because you'd be hearing the same 5 notes on your guitar the whole time when playing a song. Plus the Power Gig guitar is meant to be awful

GH is the entire issue. If Activision didnt flood the market with their trash good games of the genre would sell.


Exactly. They're two different sets of games that happen to do the same thing. People on the outside say it's all the same game over and over are just like people who say that PS Move and Wii are the exact same thing. If you actually pay attention to the rhythm genre you would realize that Rock Band 3 did add many features and there's a reason it has a meta of 94 while GH:WoR has a 72.

Yeah, i was going to say the same thing.  The irony is you DON'T play the actual guitar parts in Power Gig, you're just playing a typical music game on a real guitar.  I think the closest thing they have is having you play power chords (2 note chords) on the correct frets which is their version of pro mode I guess.

My bad, I do not own a game of the music genre. I did own PaRappa the Rapper, but nothing since. I took "Rock Revolution" as little kids aspiring to become the next Jimi Hendrix because the video game music genere has reach a level of maturity where games can teach them how to play Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) note by note.

From the feedback, Power Gig is going to be interesting to watch eventhough it is gimmicky with no note-for-note playing.
