Pros:

  • "Duel of the Fates" by John Williams
  • Fantastic choreography, music, and action in the final Jedi battle almost makes up for the whole movie. Almost.
  • Darth Maul is plain cool. I got shivers when he revealed it was a double-sided lightsaber.

Cons:

  • Jar Jar Binks
  • Anakin Skywalker
  • Eye-roll worthy Space battle (11 year old kid takes down the whole Droid Command Ship... What?)
  • Yoda's bulging eyes...
  • Trying to connect the two trilogies in ridiculous ways. Anakin built C-3PO? Really?
  • Reducing the Force from some mystical cosmic power to an RPG stat in midichloirans.
  • Jar Jar Binks
  • Anakin Skywalker

I think Smeags nailed it here. "Duel of the Fates" is awesome and if there's anything equally good from the prequels to the original trilogy it's the soundtracks. Aside from that, the lightsaber duel at the end was awesome as was the pod race, and for some reason, I really liked the scene of Jar Jar, Obi Wan, and Qui Gon swimming to Boss Nass. Oh and Liam Neeson's pretty awesome too.

On the bad side, there's Jar Jar, which I won't waste my time ranting about. It also spent way too much time on Tatooine with pretty much nothing happening. That and the space battle was indeed pretty lame. And let's just pretend like nobody notices how similar Sidious's voice and appearance are to Palpatine's.

So overall, probably a 5 out of 10 for me as well. I must admit, darth and boutros baffle me with some of the films that they like.

I hope I didn't miss SW 1 vote

Ultimatly the movie failed by a handful of reasons. Many I'm sure have been mentioned. I'm a pretty tolerant movie goer. I can like bad movies. I find the ideas, message and story behind the movies to really propel it. Even if the fx and acting are bad. Here is why I don't like PM

The Characters were weak. I really can't express it much more than that. There is no hero that we follow and all the characters are shallow.

The Mystisim. Weak. The Force was some bad ass element of the universe. It was Zen. In PM it's some bizaar form of science. Before it was Mind over Matter. Now it's chemical manipulation over magnetic forces. It's just taken some away.

Theme. Original SW was gritty. This was more like Star Trek.

Jar Jar Binks. Honestly doesn't bother me much. How he was displayed was well done. It's that the role was shoved down are faces. C3PO and R2D2 provided comedic relief by being subtle. But over all doesn't detract from the movie because I'm used to it from Disney movies.

Over all. The Budget. Many of the greatest creations are done with a small budget. SW 4 was created with a small budget. There are interviews that have mentioned that SW 4 was considered a B movie during production. It had a B movie budget. But Lucas and the Director saw past the Budget and attempted new things with what they had. PM had a Massive budget. It was intentionally made to be a big summer movie block buster. Like Jar Jar the position failed because it tried to shove what it was down our throats.

The trailer - rather ironically, Episode 1 undoubtably had one of the best trailers ever released

I remember downloading that trailer (around 20Mb) on a 54K connection, waiting a couple hours for it, watching it over and over and thinking Episode I was going to be the best thing ever but in the end the trailer was better than the movie.

lol.. me too.. I remember it was an Apple exclusive trailer... it was freking amazing.. Every generation has a legend. Every journey has a first step. Every saga has a beginning.

The trailer still makes me believe there's actually a good version of the film out there (sadly there isn't).

Off topic - slightly - there's an amazing bit in the extras where you're allowed to see Lucas and crews reaction after watching the first full cut.  Needless to say they are all worried and know they've screwed the pooch (this being in the days before you'd Nuke the Firdge) and I'm amazed Lucas let it remain in the extras.

Given how bad the final released cut was, I'd very much love to see just how bad that cut must have been (well, love is probably the wrong word, but you know what I mean).

Man I love those extras, all those people just looking on in terror because the film is utter shit, they're too far in to fix anything, and nobody is willing to stand up to George Lucas.

Did you see the other two excellent parts?

  • The part where Lucas says Jar-Jar is the key to the whole film and how they've never had a character as funny as him.
  • The part where they're casting Anakin and it comes down to one amazing kid and one awful kid who couldn't even speak his lines.  Guess which one Lucas picked.

Actually, the casting one flat out shocked me.  I know they say hindsight is cheap but I watched the audition stuff and it was so obvious the other kid was the far better choice.

The bit about Jar Jar actually had my jaw on the floor!

I don't like the film much, but i have to give Lucas Kudos for allowing this stuff on the extras.  Really quite amazing.

And you're right, there were some expressions of utter horror.  RThe producer in particular looked like he was about to enter flight mode and run from the room in a panic at any moment.

Probably the best moment of any behind the scenes stuff I've seen - just that amazing access to a moment when a bunch of actually talented people looked at something they'd created as a group and realized it was a bit shit actually.

Amazing.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I'm a big Star Wars fan but this was pretty average.

6/10

Darth Maul was fuckin sick! Watching him fight with his awesome Double Ended Lightsaber against Qui Gon and Obi Wan was bloody good.

The Music was holy shit epic.

But:

Anakin was an annoying piece of shit

Obi Wan killing Darth Maul was lame

I liked it :)

Pros: Qui gon, Darth Maul, young Anakin, The pod races, Anakin's owner, The Gungans, the Droids, the doors in the Palace, foce speed, awesome goosebumps creating duel music.

Cons: Midiclorians (wtf was Lucas thinking, totally ruining the idea of the force), the "jump out of the well-grab light saber in air-land-PAUSE-activate lightsaber-cut IDLE Darth Maul in half" sequence was a total let down (a reoccurring flaw, as we shall see later); preferred sequence: jump-grab-activate cut-land.

8 for me.

It showed from the begining that this new trilogy was going to be more political, and I loved that.

I loved the photography and the costumes, though I hated some characters as Jar Jar (it plays the role of the stupid pig in Valkyria Chronicles: a stupid mascot meant to cause... what?).

I loved McGregor and later I loved him even more and so I did the beautiful Padme Amidala, but for different reasons.

Personally, I sit in the position of believing the later trilogy is better than the original one (which I watched when I was just a kid, and which I think is totally kid oriented, with no real depth). For me, it brought new meaning to the whole story in a very possitive way.

Well let's see:

the Original Trilogy was set in an galaxy where an Evil Empire rules.

The new one was in a Galactic Republic where things are plentiful and all are happy (exaggeration).

You're right, they are different in theme.

Want to know the really sad thing?

The whole bet is just plain stupid and if Qui Gonn was going to go far enough to use his Jedi powers to manipulate people, the outcome of die rolls, offer worthless things, etc (essentially lying, cheating, stealing, and just doing things Jedi don't do), then you would think it would be far easier to just take the kid rather than go through the whole convoluted bet.

Weren't they in need of an expensive part to the ship so they can leave the planet in a hurry? Also, Qui Gon tries to manipulate Watoo to take credits, useless on Tatooine but worth quite a lot in practically the rest of the Galaxy, so not exactly stealing, while on the other hand manipulates the dice, not leaving that part to luck, but not gaining anything directly by that either. Both quite harmless and subtle attempts of manipulation, and one could argue preferable to a direct action (like stealing) on a planet like Tatooine with others to care for.

I'd give it a 4

and I'd say I like Star Wars

I have a bad feeling about this...
