Level-5 is also trying to make Ninokuni a premiere worldwide brand, they aren't just going to give up on it.
And to do that they need the PS3 version to succeed a lot, in Japan and in the West.
3DS may be the future or it may not.....that isn't proven yet. Once upon a time the PS3/N64 was the future and the surefire king of the next generation.

Once upon a time SNES/PS2 was the future and the surefire king of the next gen. 2nd time's the charm, 3rd time's the bomb. ;)
And yeah, Ninokuni will get a huge push, no doubt... but Layton has been a somewhat unheralded success story in all markets (thanks in large part to Nintendo too), and Inazuma Eleven is an even bigger hit in Japan and i'd say it's European potential is similarly massive... comparably, I just don't see Ninokuni as a concept being on par worldwide (though I do think it may beat both in Japan alone, Ghibli = Money). Worldwide though, I definitely see it 3rd in line.
For upcoming L-5 cross-media IP blitzes, I'm actually most curious about how LBX/Danboard Senki does. I'll be big in Japan for sure (though how big is always a question... 300k big? 500k big? 800k big? 1m plus big?), but it has like zero potential elsewhere due to it's platform. :/
