You're not getting old, much of the music on the radio these days seems pretty generic, to me too at least. Not all of it, but more and more none the less.

Am I getting old?

Yes.

Trust me, it happens to us all. I remember my parents saying exactly the same thing in the 80s. And their parents told them the same thing in the 50s and 60s. Pop music all sounds the same, and it doesn't sound like something the older peeps think is good.

Welcome to being old.

Don't worry, we all do it.

Not really because i love music from any genre. Even all he way back to the 40's and i am 19.

I will say one thing though, i really really do hate grime, 4x4 and the likes, i also skip the rap in a few songs aswell if i just find that the rapper has not go no flow

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Turn on any radio station playing the so called hit songs. Many of them have some form of rapping chorus.

The singer, the music and the chorus, I find them headache inducing.

They don't even have a good voice. And the rapping, oh my, it's like a someone speaking English as foreign language with the tone pretty much flat.

Am I getting too old?

Yes.

The majority of most people every generation, particularly those who consider themselves to have "good musical taste," will eventually hit a point past the peak of their youth where they realize they just don't relate to Top 40 radio play anymore.

So... welcome to adulthood.

Of course most people with "good musical taste" generally don't judge music of the time based on Top 40 hits or whatever happens to be the most popular song du jour.

Good music is always out there, regardless of current times; you just have to know where to look for it if you're so inclined. It should go without saying that Top 40 radio is probably one of the last places to look.

Pop music always sucked.

Yes, even the stuff you loved as a child. Admit it and move on.

Before Gaga/Ke$ha, there was Britney/n*sync. Before that, there was Paul Abdul and Ace of Base. Before that, there were hundreds of terrible synth bands. Continue ad nauseum.

Not that I care about Top 40 pop music, but there is a difference between Gaga (who I will admit I wrote off as being "just the flavor of the day") and all the earlier pop artists you referred to in that she's a legitimate musician and as far as I know, she's had classical musical training, as in she can read and write music and actually writes her own songs.

I don't know if Ke$ha writes her own music and I really don't even care enough to check, but point is there are actual pop stars who are legit musicians, even if their music meshes with the lowest common demoninator by design.

Most pop acts are manufactured by studio producers. All boy pop groups with the exception of Hanson, and girl pop groups like the Spice Girls all fall into the "studio concoction" formula which often appeals to mainstream radio.

Pat Benatar was accepted to Juilliard. Just sayin'. I'm not bashing Gaga, just pointing out that she's nothing special.

Pop music blows period.  At work they sometimes turn the radio on to the pop stations and I'm like wtf.  For one the station is owned by Clear Channel so they have about 20 songs on their playlist.  Two, all the singers use electronic voice which requires zero talent.  Lastly, did I mention it is pop music...  I am stuck in the 90s rock myself.  I also enjoy classic rock, hard rock, and reggae.  I don't listen to the radio much but at least in Austin, TX they have a few good rock stations (that are independently owned or least not owned by Clear Channel).

Is it just me, or was ALL music in the 80s pop music with the difference between acts being some sold a bunch of singles and (or in a lot of cases, sold one single before disappearing off the face of the planet) and the rest didn't?

Oh wait. There was a lot of hair rock in the 80s too.

Personally, I don't see any appeal in Gaga, but she does strike me as being the "Madonna" of the 2010s. And no, I never liked Madonna either. So I understand the appeal. I just don't care for it.

Before I see other people's comments & get influenced, let me just say that I'm 20 & I think most of the hit songs are bad. I tend to listen more to songs that came out any time before the last 4 years than the current hits. And I do love rap but hip hop & black music generally is becoming very annoying. So are the popular white people whose songs are listened to by more blacks than whites.

Not trying 2 discriminate here, I am black, just that I find the music influenced by blacks in the last 4 years to be going downhill.

My thread for teaching VGC some Nigerian slangs

People are still innovating and moving music forward, it's just not the huge pop artists at the moment.

Music videos changed music and gave everyone their first taste of ADD culture but there were several bands in the 80s that were both popular and solid musicians (REM, U2, GnR, Metallica, David Bowie, The Smiths, etc.). In fact, here is a short list of top ten 80s musicians I found:

  1. Michael Jackson
  2. Prince
  3. Madonna
  4. U2
  5. Bruce Springsteen
  6. Run-D.M.C.
  7. Van Halen
  8. Public Enemy
  9. Billy Joel
10. The Police

Madonna and MJ are pop but no one else is considered pop music.

Galaki, you are getting old. Listen to Hapimeses' words. That old guy's wise.

And here's a fun quote:

"The world is passing through troublous times. The young people of
today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for
parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as
if they knew everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is
foolishness with them. As for the girls, they are forward, immodest
and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress."

Whomever can guess who said it gets a cookie.
