Forums - Nintendo - Was WiiParty a smart decision by Nintendo?

It did sell well but in North America and Europe it is only selling 10's of thousands where as didn't Mario Party sell way better? Japan is like the only country the game is doing well in, really well in. Should Nintendo have made it MarioParty instead. Or are the sales in Japan worth the drop in sales in the EMEAA and North America?

You notice that there wasn't a drop from week 1 to week 2 in the US? That's

That's pretty important to note

Yah but selling 90,000 in a couple weeks is not really good. Nintendo considered Jungle Beat a failure when it sold like 32,000 at launch and that was on the GameCube which had a much smaller user base!

Userbase is not equivalent to expectations. This is something you need to internalize.

Nothing is a failure based on its first week. Wii Party will cruise languidly past every Mario Party in history with a wink and a smile, at a pace so leisurely you'll barely notice it.

I think the game is a very unique take on the party genre.   Hidding the remotes may be the most fun I've had in a party game in years.

We've not had a chance to play through every mode yet but it's easily one of the best party games for Wii.

Good to know, I'm still debating a purchase. I loved MarioParty but am sceptical when it comes to Wii party especially since sales in NA weren't nearly as high as I expected. Is it fun to play solo is another question as I played MariParty solo all the time to unlock things?

Haven't had a chance to try it solo yet.

I too enjoyed Mario Party 8.  I loved the way the different boards had completely different game mechanics to win or advance.   Wii Party has a mix of Mario Party style board gaming (though it moves much faster) and some innovative party modes.   Hiding your remotes in one mode adds a whole new level to the interactivity between the players and the game.  I can't wait to play that mode drunk with other adults.

A very smart decision.

It's going to sell a ton, and earn Nintendo a tidy profit.

Did the Wii really need another party game though, when it's going through troubles like it is right now...?

They must be really putting a lot of faith in Donkey Kong.

(And on an off topic note, I saw a TV advert for Epic Mickey yesterday morning when my sister had the Disney Channel on downstairs. The game doesn't release for a full Month! Game's gonna get a LOT of advertising.)

Huh, and i watched Disney Channel all evening (Harry Potter, i.e. the first good thing they've shown on that channel in a long time) and didn't catch it. But that's still a good sign

On topic: o_O at that huge week 2 PAL bump

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Was on the UK Disney Channel.

Was kinda a cool advert, showed a lot of gameplay and had Oswald laughing at Mickey at the end of the ad.

You guys should have it soon enough I'd have thought.
