Forums - Sony - 1 Million Move Controllers Sold in America, 1.5 Million in Europe So Far

Staude said:

Many people quote the game sales as proof that sony is overstuffing the channels.. Did anyone concider that many people who got the controller already has games that support them and might not have enough money to buy a bunch of new games.. or even any new games for it ? ..

Afterall, with all these units shipped and with the problems finding them at retail.. Where would you proclaim the missing units are ? I heavily doubt that retailers are hiding the controllers.. :p

Though the bundles are available most places.. So they might have shipped more bundles than necessary compared to standalone controllers..

I pre-ordered a controller. Already had a camera and none of the initial titles struck me as being "must buy."

I downloaded the Move update for Heavy Rain and ordered a copy of RE5 Gold and that was it for the launch.

But so far, no Move "game sales" from this consumer. I will be picking up a copy of Sports Champions eventually, possibly a starter pack since I need another controller and the extra camera is only $10.

For the record, I've yet to see a standalone controller on shelves at retail since launch, so I guess they're hiding pallets of unsold units stacked in store rooms.

Or as the crazy tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorist might say; SCE simply hasn't been shipping enough controllers to meet current demand.

Why is it every time Sony reports a number people starts saying that Sony is stuffing the channels. Why would retailers buy a product from Sony if it is not selling?

Last Quarter Sony reported shipped numbers which were off from Vgchartz numbers and adjustments were made later on, nevertheless, people keeps coming up with stuffing the channels excuse. In the end, Vgchartz numbers are estimates  based on sampling and Sony numbers are real counted shipped numbers to retailers.

You're missing the massive elephant in the room.

Every tracking firm is typically around 85-95% (sold) to what Sony and others say they shipped. This time all of them, including VGCHartz, NPD, etc are at about 45% of what Sony says they shipped.

So either Sony is stuffing retail (which I believe as I've seen tons in every store since launch) or all of the tracking firms are way low. Granted, the stuffing of retail very well may not be their fault as retailers may have way over purchased thinking it would be hotter than it is. This would also explain why SOA says they had to increase production as retail orders were higher than they thought as well.

just throwing this out there, but retailers have hidden consoles before (namely the Wii back when it was constantly supply constrained). Not that I'm saying it is happening, just that it isn't that crazy of a theory if they don't think they are going to get supply for the holidays.

The difference is that retailers were unscrupulously using doled out Wii inventory to lure in customers (remember all those X units guaranteed to be available on X day ads?) in addition to all the forced crappy bundling that was going on.

Move simply doesn't have the same draw factor; they're just controllers. I will stand corrected the day we start seeing forced bundling of Kung Fu Rider with standalone controllers.

So many bullshit why dont they say shipped ?? Gosh een NPD sated that Move not even reached 300K. God Sony u guys overship alot but have a reason... Holidays baby!

From Sony's perspective, once a unit has been SOLD from them to the retailers, it is sold, despite the fact that it is being shipped to a retailer where it will be sold once more.

It's like saying that a video game still counts as being shipped after you buy it from the store, while you drive home with it.

Edit: On topic: Grats, pretty decent number and fairly in line with VGChartz predictions I believe.

Ah, didn't see this thread.  Apparently Pachter underestimated Move's sales initially when he said it sold around 300k and below expectations:

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=118193

"It's ahead of what I thought previously," said Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Securities. "I think that they are a lock to sell 3 to 4 million by Dec. 31, and a lock to hit more than 5 million by fiscal year end" on March 31.

Everyone does realize of course that anyone who has already "decided" that Move has been a failure only referred to Pachter's initial underperforming assessment and will ignore his rather optimistic reassessment.

I think alot of people with a Move controller are playing some of the updated games. I for one only have one move game and that is sports championship, but I played RUSE, MAG, Heavy Rain and all the demos on PSN with my move. I wonder do these move sales include the nav controller?

I aint missing any elephants my friend, it is just common sense. First, how did you know that it sold 45% according to NPD when NPD put a hold on publishing numbers in the same month MOVE was launched.

Second, if Sony is stuffing the channels, then why retailers are ordering more and Sony is planning to double proudction to meet retailers orders?

Finally, those are shipped numbers, my estimate is that move sold 1- 1.2 million units just for NA.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

They sold 2.5mio units in just 30 days and that moronic Pachter thinks they sell another 0.5-1mil in the coming two months (which includes Xmas season and Japan)...

What a complete loser this Pachter is... unbelievably stupid

Lol, of course they will.  Because in their mind: Move = Fail & Kinect = TEH HUGE SUCCESS!!  This will be regardless of sales numbers.

In my mind, it looks like Sony and Move are going to have a really good holiday season.  On a personal note, 3 seperate people from 3 seperate households have decided to buy Move this Christmas just from playing it once at my house.
