Probably the most misleading thread title iv ever seen. Just because she wants immigrants to actually try and integrate themselves properly into Germany she is being compared to a mass-murderer.

Seriously why don't we ever compare people to another mass-murderer like Stalin, why is HITLER THE STANDARD!

Well, Merkel is German. Hitler seemed more appropriate than Stalin.

A comparison to Hitler (or Stalin) would not even be appropriate in a discussion about Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or Kim-Jong-il, so what makes you think it's an appropriate comparison for Merkel, an extremely moderate conservative politician, who loves to get rid of her macho opponents in her own party (a show which I very much enjoy), not the people living in her country?

Bah, why did I even enter this thread - I have to defend a politician I never voted for and never will.

Again: If you want to discuss European immigration and integration topics, why no thread instead about French president Sarkozy's recent expulsion of the Roma which alienated all other EU governments (with the exception of Italy)?

1. I already explained why I used this title (big mistake on my part, and I apologised).

2. Gypsies should put an effort into integrating themselves if they want to live in European countries.

2. I think Sarkozy did a good job. Too bad they're sending them back here in Romania.

Wow, I'm at a loss for words.

Hey, I rewrote that!

so either multiculturalism doesnt work...

OR

Right Wing governments just arent trying hard enough, because if it does work, they have to start being nice to people who dont conform to what they want them to be.

Truth be told, it's pretty hard for multiculturalism to work. For example immigrants coming from a country where the culture is sexist will probably have a hard time making their traditional culture survive in their new home country where equality between sexes is the norm.

it depends how you do it, even people who support multiculturalism do not support people being able to break the law and stuff, but beyond that if you are tolerant and people come and understand the laws, which you have to assume they do if they come to your nation, then I dont see why people cant get along.

besides, Germany is hardly a good example for either case, there main party is Christian so by its nature biased against many things for no good reason, tolerance is not something they know much about.

This is not true at all. Our Minister of Foreign Affairs (in a conservative / liberal government) is openly homosexual (Guido Westerwelle), the Minister-President of the State of Lower Saxony (a conservative) is a Scottsman and has chances to become the head of federal government at some point (David McAllister), the conservatives are currently governing in a coalition government with the Green Party in the state of Hamburg and the Green Party leader is a muslim (Cem Özdemir).

I can go on if you want me to

tokenism is not the same as tolerance kid.

Tokenism? Why don't you actually read what the people I mentioned think about it? McAllister even gives interviews in english. Germany is not any less tolerant than the UK is.

And that "kid" was just... well, rude. And totally uncalled for. I tell people critizising immigrants and I'll tell you: get rid of your prejudices so we can have an actual discussion. Lack of knowledge is the number one source of prejudices.

I agree that Muslims should adapt to the Western countries they move to, but they shouldn't have to adopt Christian values.  Instead, they should have to adopt secular Western values that have proven superior to the values of Christianity, Islam, etc.

I never claimed the UK was tolerant, nor would I as we are not, I just think multiculturalism goes beyond "we have more muslims in our government than you", its about society and policy, just giving up because its hard is pretty pathetic and imo seems like a lame excuse for nationalist policies.

I don't know where you get the idea the UK isn't a tolerant country, I've travelled quite a bit around eastern europe and I can assure you it's very tolerant compared to most countries, imo too much.

being more tolerant than other nations does not make it a tolerant nation though...just other nations worse...

the UK has far too many morons in it who think that they are better than everyone else and who cling pathetically to the days of empire, this country badly needs a kick in the nads to get it into the 21st century.
