Forums - Nintendo - Pachter Time: Wii HD a missed oportunity

A Wii HD would be a kick in the face to all the people who bought the wii. What would be the point of those 70 mill owners of Wii SD when they cant buy the new HD games of Wii HD. And would they buy a new console that cannot play their old SD games?

Wii HD is not practical for obvious reasons that don't need to be said. A full fledged new console that supports HD from Nintendo is a better idea. One more year or 2 for the wii and I believe their next console will be out, unless they do something to increase the life of the machine.

This is so cute. They guy tells the truth and people get butthurt.

He isn't doing his job to please fanboys. He does it for investors and guess what? The people who invest their money want to make money for their investments. Shocking, isn't it?

We've known for a long time that he's been on the take from certain 3rd parties whose stock he represents, to tell the investors what those 3rd parties want them to hear. We equally know that third parties desperately wish they had another platform to do zero-effort multiplats to, hence the push for this

Are you sure that the tin foil is not too tight?

A simple HD upgrade would be pathetic comparing to what Nintendo might bring us next gen.

This is an understatement!

I guess you haven't been paying attention to Pachter.  No matter what the hardware is, he always says it needs a price cut.  What does he say about software?  That is should be more expensive.

He is a shill for the big publishers.

Bingo. Remember when he suggested that people were willing to pay for a premium Call of Duty service? It doesn't take an industry insider to see that would be a bad move (especially to comodify something that was previously free), and the market for games constantly suggests that they are too expensive already. He makes many statements that stand outside business sense if we look at it from the consumer's perspective, but if we look at it from the side of the publishers...

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

That's the thing, package a commodity that was previously free or close to free and profit! It's big business.

For example, package water into a bottle and name it Spring. You make a killing even though it's worse than tap water in most places (bar 3rd world countries).

Did he also recommend 32x to Sega? Seriously, revamping a system like that midway through a generation does not seem like it would work. Too many SKUs just leads to headaches for the customers.

Is it a missed opportunity for Nintendo? Yeah, probably. And I know some people might think this is stupid but I actually almost respect Nintendo more for not releasing a Wii-HD because I think it would be kind of a cheap cash-in to get people to buy a new console for something that's not really all that special. Clearly the next Nintendo console will be an HD console, but I wouldn't buy a mild upgrade for the Wii. I'd rather just buy an all-new console when it launches, an not an interim console.

Bah!

You are absolutely right.  Trying to start over in the middle of a generation is suicide for a hardware maker.  Pachter doesn't care about that though.  He only cares about publishers.  Another console for publishers to make easy ports to would only be good for them.  Since this would hurt Nintendo in the process, other publishers would like it even more.
