Forums - Nintendo - Associated Content: Wii and the 3rd party curse

Also, past experience and sales matter quite a lot for 3rd party developers. EA went into creating Dead Space for the Wii thinking with the Wii's audience it would sell 2 million (twice the amount sold on PS3 or 360 alone). Instead, the latest numbers for Dead Space: Extraction are.... .28 million. 280,000 compared to a 2.27 million between the PS3 and 360.

EA is thinking if Nintendo has the largest audience, then how come our game which was well received and sold really well on the HD systems could not break 300k on the system with supposedly the largest audience?

This is what matters and we will see it happen with Activision and Goldeneye on the Wii. The original Goldeneye sold 8.09 million on the N64 during an era where FPS were solely reserved for PC gamers. Goldeneye on the N64 was the best looking FPS (in my opinion) when I bought it and played it for the N64 shattering all preconceived notions of FPS and consoles.

As for Goldeneye and the Wii, I will not be surprised (not predicting) if it sells less than 500,000 these holidays. Hell, I have yet to see Goldeneye break the top 30 on VGChartz Preorder charts.

When Goldeneye bombs on the Wii in terms of sales, Activision like EA will blame it on the audience of the Wii who they will think of as fickle, do not have a love for video games outside of Wii Sports and the occasional platformer, therefore we will only develop games on systems who cater to that traditional, dedicated 13-30 male demographic who will buy our games in the millions.

I could be wrong, but the preorder charts for Goldeneye Wii are not giving me any hope.

In these cases, it is not graphics, but how the developer approaches the audience along with their expectation for what the audience of the particular system wants. Companies like EA and Activision are staffed by male developers with plenty of testosterone and the drive to create a realistic, violent game for those their age or a bit younger. Nintendo is all about following the formula from the original Super Mario Bros. on where gameplay and attracting everyone  is what will sell, not graphics or realism.

People were excited about Dead Space coming to Wii before they found out it was a rail shooter. Case in point...

Then it was just a crappy product. Such a shame that the original Dead Space like Bioshock was classic, but they did not even put in half the effort for the Wii.

The Wii audience deserves more, and in this case it is the fault of developer for thinking they could put out Dead Space Carnival Games and expect it to sell.

@LordThenightKnight

I'm not disagreeing with you that third parties generally don't make things easy for themselves by producing a lot of shoddy titles, but the breadth (and generally strength) of Nintendo's library is a big factor in their relative lack of success on the Wii.  I'm not sure it was quite the same in the SNES and NES days. In the NES days, Nintendo was as much a newcomer as anyone else and was in the process of building the reputation of its IPs (of which there were obviously fewer than there are on the Wii) - a reputation that was pretty much established by the end of the SNES' run (and probably a bit before).  Now it is different - Mario isn't just a side-scrolling platform character, he's at the forefront of 2D platformers, 3D ones, a racing game, a series of sports games, an RPG series... and that's just one character.  Many people might buy an Xbox at launch because they want to play Halo and are open to whatever else comes along - similarly people might be buying a PlayStation because they're Gran Turismo fans and that is the only game they've absolutely decided they're getting.  With such customers, third parties have a lot of the pie to go for.  But lots of people picking up a Wii who are as game-oriented as HD owners might have mentally committed to picking up all Mario platformers and any Zeldas, Mario Karts, Smash Bros, Mario sports games, Metroids etc. that appear, giving the third parties less of the pie to go for.  As for the more casual Wii gamers - well, they're introduced to the Wii series out of the box, and are enticed to a couple of other Wii ____ games with the offer of a 'free' Wiimote.  And being casual gamers, they are more likely to be drawn into a purchase by TV adverts than a metacritic score - and I very rarely see adverts for third party Wii games.

Sorry, I've rambled a bit there.

Who else finds it ironic that given Wii's piss poor decent 3rd party support, it's managed to achieve exclusivity on what is possibly the biggest 3rd party home console exclusive this gen after MGS4?

Halo 3?

nevermind.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Still have that chat? 3rd parties miss the boat at the beginning of the generation and did nothing to catch it up later. But their strategy start to pay off. For example in Japan the ps3 at last is selling more than the wii because it has more regular new release of big games.

One word about dead space: first the game sold much under the expectations of EA on HD consoles. second i was send to die on the wii: the only people that know about the franchise are the HD owner, and they all run away from the prequel as soon as they know it will be on rail. Last a really ugly cover and no advertisement to be sure no one knows about the game and they don't take it by chance in the store and you have a bomb.

But we must first concentrate ourselves on the way to entertain people, for video games to live. Else, it's a world where sales representative will win, which has as effect to kill creativity. I want to say to the creators all around the world:"Courage, Dare!". Shigeru Miyamoto.

Dragon Quest X

I had a major brain fart and figured Halo was 3rd party. Nevermind that.

Still, Mario & Sonic (technically 3rd party) and probably Just Dance 1 & 2 are all bigger than MGS4.

But Dragon Quest X should be pretty huge (IF it comes this generation).

Only Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is bigger than MGS4.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

plus Mario & Sonic is multiplat, so I didn't include it in my original post

True, but I just assumed he was referring to the Wii version, since right now it's at 7.66 million.

I don't think that there are no 3rd party good games on the Wii. I can name at least 10 off the top of my head;

MHTri

Okami

Conduit

Bit:Trip Series

Little King's Story

MySims

Xenoblade

Sengoru Basara 3

NMH1&2

Resident Evil 4

HOTD: Overkill

All this-gen exclusives to the best of my knowledge. People who say there are no good 3rd party games for the Wii has clearly never looked or doesn't care. Probably both. I'm sick of people, especially developers, saying there are no good games from 3rd parties for the Wii. GIVE IT SOME GODDAMN EFFORT THEN!

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.
