Forums - Nintendo - Mark Rein: 3DS is below our specs

Alby_da_Wolf said:

Everything else can be managed with little problems, but too little main RAM could create problems, or at least additional work that otherwise could have been avoided, porting the most complex games from other platforms. 3DS is a portable that's already making hardcore gamers drool, they could become an important part of its market like for PS3 and XB360, small RAM is an error that must not be committed. Unless Nintendo planned from the start to rely almost exclusively on 1st party, 3rd party exclusives and DS back compatibility, totally snubbing multiplats.

I'm not sure to which extent, but reading things from a cartridge is very different from reading them from optical media when it comes to RAM requirements.

Fail on those calling fail...

Seriously people, grow up.

If you call fail, you are fail and that is all there is to it. Mark Rein has a hell of a lot more credibility than any of you.

This comment has been ignored for some strange reason.

I think I will quote you, just incase people miss it the first time

Reasons aren't strange.

People are still in denial that Nintendo did it again. And will be releasing machine that isn't even near current standards while charging hefty price tag on it. And what worse they will be selling this machine for next 6-7 years.

Sadly the more i learn about 3DS the less i want it.

Nintendo did it again? Not inflating their specs is treated like a bad thing?

Plus so many other developers have gushed about the system being something they have been asking for from Nintendo, and this is supposed to not be near current standards?

Plus are you forgetting that handheld standards right now are only from a machine costing even more than the 3DS will?

Yes when those specs will make everything on your platform look bad in 2 years time after release and very bad after 5-6 years then not giving up to date cpu, gpu and ram is bad.

If IGN is right they are somewhere at level of 200 euro smartphone but in two-three years time those 200 euro smartphones will have specs of current top of line phones like iphone 4 and Galaxy S while Nintendo will be selling same 3DS. And in 6 years time 3DS will compare to top of line smartphone like current DS to Galaxy S.

so just like the xbox 360 then or any other reasonably priced launch console...

they are not SONY they are not going to invest ~$1b to develop a CPU so they can have technical superiority. And everything in computing gets outdated, usually within a year. So what's your point, the 3DS is fine, not top of the line but as good as you can expect for the price (using the expected $250 US price) all features considered.

That's a matter of perception mind you, with this kind of stance you may as well claim that everything on, say, PS3 looked bad in 2008-09 compared to games on only marginally more expensives PCs, that played the same exact multiplats in superior screen and texture resolutions.

Don't be delusional, 200 euro smartphones that has some decent hardware real cost are nowhere near 200 euros, that's why they're selling with two-year contract each.

In reality I'd assume Rein's comment on 3DS more has to do with it's being GLES1.1 device, not in any way he implied they can't get UE3 running on it and delivering a very good player's experience. Maybe Nintendo should take more proactive role and call them for support if there's demand for a good middleware for 3DS.

1. I'm speaking about 200 euro smartphones without plan. 200 euro with plan is Galaxy S levels (well actually this one is 100 euro with 25 euro plan in Poland) or iphone 4 those two stomp 3ds into ground graphic wise.

2. PS3 graphics looked bad in 2009 when compared to pc.

What do you expect? A re-release every six months that makes the previous ones obsolete to new games? There's no way they can "future-proof" the thing. Specially a handheld. Do you want it to compare to pc graphics? Or be even better, so it can keep up with pc graphics as they go up on the next 6 years? That's kind of, you know, impossible :P

And what are those 200 euros phones that as you've worded it citing IGN "at level of 3DS"?

Would you mind elaborating this?

Could you please show me an actual iphone game that stomps Resident Evil Revelations into the ground? Gameplay visible in the recent software line-up trailer.
