Forums - Nintendo - Will Nintendo start an internet revolution?

They already confirmed that they will be partnering up in Japan to distribute 3D video content. Also with the addition of some form of web browser on the 3DS it is clear that they are moving to offer more than just gaming. But gaming is still their main focus and other features are built around that.

Bolded will be just a very secondary thing like Netflix recently added to Wii. It's like supporting Opera browser on DSes, did it start mobile internet revolution? No, it didn't, it was rather secondary, and cheap.

The point is that establishing 3D standards for the Web can't be done in such "easy come" manner. And pushing it won't be cheap thus Nintendo will need to cut profits (something which they won't do) or increase price of 3DS even more. That's not good for gaming, and Nintendo won't do it. And I bless them for that.

my point was that Nintendo did have interests outside of gaming especially for the 3DS, you said that nintendo had "zero interest beyond gaming" which is not true and I gave a solid example. I don't think that Nintendo are going to start a web revolution anyway, I am not even convinced that the 3DS will be able to view web video yet, let alone for it to be good enough to spark a revolution.

well since almost all 3DTVs will have a internet browser too i doubt that this "revolution" is going to happen just because of nintendo... by the chance that it really happens, nintendo will have its part in it but it will not be alone in it!

edit: also many mobile phone makers are also developing 3.5G and 4G phones with glassless 3d screens like 3DS (mainly with Sharp screens like 3DS but there are more screen makers that also have prototypes to apply in near future phones)

This. I expect it to happen but not because of Nintendo. 3D has just had rapidly growing support as of late. Nintendo's just joining in the swing of things. Simple as that.

I can see the porn industry having a little fun with this. Come on, the first mass-market 3D camera, browser, and screen all in one internet/SD card ready package? Sure Nintendo's not thinking of this, but porn companies and sites like Xtube would be stupid NOT to be.

People are not understanding what I meant when I said Nintendo could start an internet revolution. I never meant that Nintendo themselves would go out into the market and invest millions online to kickstart a revolution. I meant web developers and programmers will want to offer content that will draw in 3DS users.

Example after the Wii and DS both got browsers I know for a fact that website developers did adjust how they made sites to make them compatable with the DS and Wii. Infact several sites started up trying to get a piece of the market. Now all I'm saying is I expect the same thing could happen with the 3DS except this time website developers will want to start producing 3D content for their websites viewable by the 3DS.

Example I gave is movie sites offering 3D trailers for their upcoming films, game sites doing the same. Some websites may include 3D into their interface. If 3DS sells like hot cakes I suspect that several dozen to hundred sites will begin incorporating 3D into their sites.

After 3DS other devices will come out and the online revolution will speed up gaining steam and eventually 3D could become a norm for online.

So again I never meant Nintendo will finance a revolution, just that because of the 3DS web developers will begin to include 3D content on their websites and before you know it it will become norm.

You must be living in a pinkingdom...I mean, yeah probably couple of gaming sites were optimized, but no more than than. It wasn't on any spread unless you confused it with mobile web frenzy which was started by smartphones.

So, yeah we can be sure that a couple of sites may gimmicky try to add some 3D spice into their content, but that's all. Will it ignite 3D web frenzy? No. Will it become selling point of 3DS? No.

You can be sure about it, hell public won't perceive 3DS even as a 3D media player. Enough people are not that interested in watching movies on a tiny screen. Among portable watchers big split is also very much possible, as watching traditional media on superb screens like Super AMOLED or Retina or recently announced Clear Black Display will be much better than viewing limited amount of 3D movies on 3DS screen not so fine in terms of PQ. Appeal of traditional media players crowd led by iPhone/iTouch won't be challenged a bit just because of 3D feature.

3DS will and should stay as gaming heaven only. And not due to 3D but because of games in the first instance.

Not unless somebody else starts selling a helluva lot of 3D displays.

Take a look at this page:

http://netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=8

Nintendo gives away free web browsers for the Wii and the DSi. How much usage do these millions of internet-enabled devices register on the web? 0.01% for the Wii, and the DSi rounds down to zero. By comparison, iOS is now the third largest platform for web usage at nearly 1.18%.

How much is bundling the browser with the 3DS going to increase that web usage? I would suggest the answer is: Not much, certainly not enough that web developers take notice.

Going back to my first sentence in this post, there's no influx of 3D displays on the horizon. Nintendo tells us that touchscreens and 3D displays don't play well together, so don't expect the swelling smartphone and tablet markets to provide them. 3D TVs are floundering between different implementations and don't see much internet use anyway. That leaves PCs and laptops, which aren't showing much interest in 3D yet.

All this leaves aside the question of whether people actually want to surf the web in 3D. Seeing 3D movies and images might be nice, but the vast majority of web content is still text, and 3D probably makes reading harder on the eyes than a conventional display.

Let me know when Nintendo can get a decent unified network running before we start talking about them revolutionizing anything in regards to the internet.

I just want to play my VC games on 3DS like I can PS1 Classics on PSP.  Is that too much to ask??  ;_;
