Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo shows interesting figures about UK

http://www.vg247.com/2010/10/04/a-third-of-uk-homes-own-a-wii-says-nintendo/

Nintendo has released some Wii stats in the UK, claiming that one in three British homes own the console.

The independent figures from Chart-Track brought together the number of Wiis sold in the UK and the number of households – according to the 2006 Census, that’s 24.9 million households.

The figures have also concluded some possible sales numbers for the big N in the UK, with 8.3 million Wiis sold and 11 million DS units bought. Chart-Track normally doesn’t provide sales numbers.

The info comes as Nintendo announced which celebs will be fronting its winter ad campaign, with Ant and Dec, Sir Terry Wogan and Jedward – help us, Jebus – plus more, signed up.

There’s more over at EG.

So 8.3M Wii and it says 7.09M Wii sold on Vgchartz, you may say that's shipped but 1.3M Wii sitting on shelfs in UK alone is a lot.

"with Ant and Dec, Sir Terry Wogan and Jedward"

This just highlights everything I dislike about how Nintendo work right now. Jedward? Seriously?

And as for Wii being undertracked by over 1 Million. I dunno... That's a big number for just one country...

Actually it's 4 countries in one.

But usually theres about 2M differen between sell-through ans shipments Worldwide, but 1.3M alone in UK is a bit much, plus they are signing more celebs, so it's not like it's just Jewdward in the spotlight.  http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/article.php?id=20285

It's not shipped, Chart Track does not track "shipped".

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

It seems Vgchartz has DS at 11M which are correct.  Wii seems low it seems,

They're talking about the UK as a whole. So it's easier to say it's one country...

As for Jedward, the peeps from the US probably wont know who they are. Here -

I can understand Ant and Dec and Wogan... But Jedward. I wouldn't be surprised if using Jedward worked against them -_-

A discrepancy of over 1 million units is pretty big, really, for one country.

As for the celebs they're hiring, though I can't stand Jedward and find Ant and Dec pretty annoying, I must admit Nintendo are once again being canny with their end of year advertising. They've got several of the more successful/well known X Factor contestants heading up a marketing campaign while the new series of X Factor is pulling in millions of viewers every week in the UK. Plus, Terry Wogan and Helen Mirren are extremely well known and very well respected over here and are a big plus for Nintendo's advertising campaign.

It also baffles me no other games company has learnt and applied one of Nintendo's big marketing tricks-advertising older games consistently helps keep them on the market as evergreen titles, selling mainly to new consumers picking up the Wii/DS for the first time. It's easy money and easy sales, really.

EDIT: If you're wondering were I got the info on the other celebs: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2010-10-04-one-in-three-households-have-wii-console Helen Mirren is advertising Wii Fit Plus.

Wii VGC numbers were more or less all right with Nintendo annual reports so if it's so badly undertracked in UK then it must be overtracked in other countries.
