In order for the Wii to achieve greater than 50% market share this generation, there gonna need to sell well over 20 million units a year from now on. Thats no easy feat. The thing is the 360 and PS3 will also sell better with each progressive year as their prices go down and their game libraries grow. Thats not to say the Wii wont sell 100 million + units at the end.

Won't the Wii sell better with each progressive year as its price goes down and its game library grows?

$200 (or less) is the price people are typically willing to pay for a game console and the XBox 360 and PS3 are years away form selling at this price, and the high cost of game development and lower hardware sales will mean that the PS3 and XBox 360's libraries will be growing far slower than the Wii's library from now on.

Sure the Wii's gonna sell betterwith each progressive year. But the total number of units to beat 50% also gets higher. this year its 18 million next year it will be well over 20 million then 25 million. Im talking a year. eventually, even if the Wii sells 30 million a year, they probably still wont beat 50%

Except (of course) that the industry does not grow by 50% each year ...

1 (mabye 2) million additional new consoles are sold every year based on typical growth in the industry, the other new console sales come from tapping into new markets. While Microsoft and Sony are fighting to get that 1 (mabye 2) million additional console sales from the organic growth of the core-gamer market Nintendo will try to convince the Millions of 'casual' Nintendo DS owners to buy a Wii ...

Brain Training, Nintendogs, and Animal Crossing allowed Nintendo to rapidly grow their marketshare in the handheld market because your girlfriend, mother and grand-mother now play videogamers; what happens if Wii Fit has the same effect?

Thats why I assume Xbox and PS3 in the same catagory in the first place. Its the same demographic. For now at least. They will both eventually gun for the casuals as well. Xbox is already somewhat successful at getting it when you see their numbers for games like Guitar Hero 3 and Scene it already breaking 100k. As successful as Nintendo? NOOOOO WAAAAy. But it will get better. As for the growth, I was using inflated numbers just for the sake of argument. Nintendo cannot out pace the xbox+ ps3's growth so significantly that they can break the 50% barrior. The bar is just set way too high. Its more a sign of the growth of the industry than anything else. Keep in mind that the market share difference of the PS2. Xbox+ gamecube+ Xbox 360+Wii+ PS3 < PS2.  All combined doesnt add up to PS2. The Wii is far from that market share advantage. And yes, I am aware that the crrent gen system are far from being done from selling

If the PS2,PS3, or Xbox360 got motion controls, would the Wii still be selling as well?

Probably better Xbox and PS3 would lose sales. Nintendo has the software to back up its motion controls. Microsoft and Sony would only implement it in the games they have and it would just be a gimmicky(six axix). The games have to be specifically made for the controls, like Wii sports, and other wii games.

The Wii price cant go down so much as the others .Most people that would buy the system at 150 or 200 buy it just the same at 250 with a game .

Current numbers point to Wii dominating ,specially in the USA .The scenario put by the latest numbers and trends would be the Wii dominating in USA but not a lot over the combined 360+PS3 ,winning in Japan but a 60-40 or 65-35% against the PS3 and winning too in Europe but by not much against the PS3 and definitely below the PS3 and 360 combined numbers .In some markets as Italy ,Germany ,Spain ,Portugal and others the PS3 would win ,in others as France and UK the Wii would win but succumb against the combined PS3 and 360 numbers .

In any case I just dont want to accept that the way weaker machine and the one with the worst current and future lineup will just own traditional gaming and turn everybody into Wii Fitters and Wiidogs rabids with just a little niche for hardcore games in 2-3 games for year .

Yes because having the second highest rating game in history and two (three counting WiiFit) megasellers in Q1 2008 while Sony has nothing except 1 overlyhyped game and 2 proven IP's and loads of unproven ones.

See how anyone can twist facts?

Sony has had it's eye toy series for the PS2, and it will surely come to the PS3 as well, this is a game that can compete with wiifit.

Sorry but, no.

While I'm not prepared to go as far as RolStoppable, it's definitely not crazy to think that the Wii has a chance of reaching 50% or more of the marketplace. The system managed to outsell 360 + PS3 combined for quite a few weeks this past year. Because I'm a loser with too much time on my hands on a Sunday morning, here's the full list according to VGChartz data:

Sep. 08: Wii 252k, 360 (139k) + PS3 (97k) = 236k
Sep. 01: Wii 282k, 360 (152k) + PS3 (98k) = 250k
Aug. 25: Wii 258k, 360 (142k) + PS3 (91k) = 233k
Aug. 18: Wii 286k, 360 (112k) + PS3 (100k) = 212k
Aug. 11: Wii 270k, 360 (103k) + PS3 (98k) = 201k
Aug. 04: Wii 260k, 360 (68k) + PS3 (105k) = 173k
July 28: Wii 282k, 360 (70k) + PS3 (112k) = 182k
July 21: Wii 284k, 360 (66k) + PS3 (87k) = 153k
July 14: Wii 299k, 360 (70k) + PS3 (92k) = 142k
July 07: Wii 255k, 360 (73k) + PS3 (62k) = 135k

That's 10 straight weeks of the Wii outselling 360 + PS3 combined.

June 30: Wii 272k, 360 (83k) + PS3 (60k) = 143k
June 23: Wii 272k, 360 (80k) + PS3 (57k) = 137k
June 16: Wii 250k, 360 (88k) + PS3 (59k) = 147k
June 9: Wii 245k, 360 (85k) + PS3 (59k) = 144k
June 2: Wii 244k, 360 (69k) + PS3 (63k) = 132k
May 26: Wii 235k, 360 (68k) + PS3 (64k) = 132k
May 19: Wii 226k, 360 (79k) + PS3 (64k) = 143k
May 12: Wii 240k, 360 (89k) + PS3 (69k) = 158k
May 05: Wii 288k, 360 (96k) + PS3 (80k) = 176k
Apr. 28: Wii 295k, 360 (97k) + PS3 (77k) = 174k

Another 10 weeks in a row, as the Wii dominates the slow months of the year.

Apr. 21: Wii 232k, 360 (74k) + PS3 (82k) = 156k
Apr. 14: Wii 204k, 360 (77k) + PS3 (95k) = 172k

We have several weeks in March and early April where the PS3's European launch pushes the 360 + PS3 combo above Wii weekly sales. But before that launch, Wii dominance reigned:

Mar. 17: Wii 188k, 360 (90k) + PS3 (58k) = 148k
Mar. 10: Wii 176k, 360 (90k) + PS3 (78k) = 168k
Mar. 03: Wii 195k, 360 (98k) + PS3 (80k) = 178k
Feb. 24: Wii 228k, 360 (111k) + PS3 (49k) = 160k
Feb. 17: Wii 212k, 360 (116k) + PS3 (52k) = 168k
Feb. 10: Wii 216k, 360 (109k) + PS3 (66k) = 175k
Feb. 03: Wii 224k, 360 (109k) + PS3 (69k) = 178k
Jan. 27: Wii 244k, 360 (111k) + PS3 (73k) = 184k
Jan. 20: Wii 239k, 360 (114k) + PS3 (78k) = 192k
Jan. 13: Wii 246k, 360 (121k) + PS3 (88k) = 209k
Jan. 06: Wii 299k, 360 (144k) + PS3 (135k) = 279k

So there you go. By my count, the Wii has actually outsold 360 + PS3 combined on 33 different weeks this year. That's well above half the weeks this year! It's only during the holiday rush, when more people are willing to spend on a big purchase, that we've seen the Wii NOT outselling the other two combined. And if Microsoft and Sony hadn't cut their prices in the Fall, things might look even more skewed. The Wii is still sold out in many markets, after all.

If the Wii sells at the same rate in 2008 that it did in 2007 (and I don't see why it wouldn't), it will finish next year close to or above 50% market share.

My Website

End of 2008 totals: Wii 42m, 360 24m, PS3 18.5m (made Jan. 4, 2008)
