Forums - Nintendo - And this's how NIntendo pland to fight Piracy in the 3DS

It'll work for a while I guess

Nintendo is looking into implementing an automated firmware update system for 3DS, CEO Satoru Iwata said during an investors briefing on Wednesday.

During a Q&A session at the briefing, an attendee asked if Nintendo would be implementing anti-piracy measures via the internet. Replied Iwata, "As part of the functionality of SpotPass, we're looking into having automatic system updates via the internet."

See this story for details on SpotPass and other 3DS services.

While the question had been just about piracy, Iwata added that this system wouldn't just for preventing piracy. Nintendo is hoping to also get new functionality onto 3DS systems.

Past firmware update methods have required that the player manually initiate the update. In Nintendo's experience, said Iwata, players did not do this very much.

3DS will also have a system in place for updating the firmware through package software itself. Said Iwata, "We believed this to be doable because the usable ROM size for the 3DS would become much larger."

Iwata insisted that for both types of firmware updates, piracy prevention is secondary to offering new functionality to owners.

Unless 3DS give me free internet. It's not going to freely use my Wifi. Unless it could (auto)haxx0r my router.

It's probably along the line of the Wii autoupdate where you enable the option yourself.

That won't cut it. That just means homebrewers never choose to put this system online, until they crack it.

What they need is some sort of lockout for code running from the SD slot. Possibly automatic deletion of any file that isn't an image, movie, or sound file, or isn't an approved game save. idk. But you must never ever implement an option that gives crackers a choice to avoid it if they self-elect.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

If game piracy wasn't the huge epidemic it is today, then there could be a homebrewing community. I think it is a very small sacrifice to pay in order to prevent software theft.

I can't stand people who say "Why are you buying the game when you can just download it?" and think that they are entitled to play games, if "well, I probably wasn't going to buy it anyway. But anyway, the game is awesome, I finished it three times already!"

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

so the pirates can get away with just not putting their 3DS online?

Is it even legal to enforce updates on user without his consent in EU or USA?

Did anyone read the entire thing?  I will presume no with the "lol just go don't go online" comments.

I know, surprising isn't it. Especially being as the Wii pretty much does this already - It's only a very short jump from the Wii's "install our update or you cant play your game" to the 3DS's automatic installation

PSP uses the same trick and it really hasn't stopped piracy.

I thought about this way back in march: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=105088

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

This isn't the only anti-piracy measure being put in place fellas.   This is just the one they plan to implement via the Internet like the question asked.
