Forums - Sales - Sony PS3 YLoD: Wild Claims Reignite Xbox 360 RROD Debate

http://www.product-reviews.net/2010/09/27/sony-ps3-ylod-wild-claims-reignite-xbox-360-rrod-debate/

There seems to be some concerns regarding the actions of a hacker, after he claimed to have found a string in an .RCO file for the Sony PS3. The file says “msg_error_console_hot_pls_restart,” but what exactly does that mean? What it means is that the games console has overheated.

So what happens next is that you will need to turn your PlayStation 3 off and wait for it to cool down. The hacker believes that Sony could prevent the YLoD issue by making this feature live, that way the console will shut down if it were to overheat.

PS3Extreme, reports that MaxConsole, the original source of the article cites the hacker as saying that the only reason why Sony did not implement this feature, was for more sales. That is certainly a bold statement, one that we would not like to comment on.

Since this news came out it has now started a huge debate over the Xbox 360 RROD. The reason being is that it is believed that Microsoft could have solved the issue of the Red Ring of Death as well; so did they do it for the same reason as Sony?

lol, YLoD has nothing to do with overheat. Cool story though.

Pwned on the first post?  Quite a feat.

P.S. I don't actually know what causes the YLOD, can someone enlighten me?

my understanding is the YLOD is similar to RROD, ie it says the box has critically failed, one of the many reasons for this can be damage from overheat so not sure how you can claim overheating has nothing to do with it.

"...will reach high temperatures causing the solder on the motherboard to melt"

Of course this is not the unique cause for this, but denying that it is a heat-related problem is naive. It is mostly heat-related.

Hmm yeah it makes perfect sense to make consoles die and then sell another one to gamer losing another $100 in the process.

The hacker fails the logic test here as Sony was losing money on consoles until very recently.

1- The PS3 does shut itself down when its dangerously over heating (red light will begin flashing first)

2- Lets not forget until recently Sony was losing money (lots of money) on every unit sold

So MS deliberately wasted over 1 billion dollars to provide warranties/support for the RROD, when they didn't need to? They lost a lot of customers who were afraid that if they bought a 360 it would RROD, again when they didn't need to? That doesn't sound plausible at all.

Where as I think Sony could of managed the YLOD issue better I think this article is stretching the conclusions somewhat. Also it is fairly obvious that the YLOD is very much related to heat so not sure how anybody got owned by claiming it has nothing to do with heat. Anyway both manufacturers have I believe for the most part resolved the majority of these heat issues.

For my money both Microsoft and Sony suffered heat stress related issues which showed themselves in different ways. One console suffered a much higher failure rate than the other which in a way insulated Sony from to much backlash over its own heat issues.

Yup Sony wanted people to go and buy more PS3's even tho they were losing hundereds of dollars on each one sold.
