Then I better be able to burn it onto a physical disc. Seriously, I am not comfortable with owning the "right" to view a movie, listen to music, or play a game. At all. What happens if I have to reformat my hard drive and lose my login information or cancel my account to reactivate a month or 2 years later? Do I have to repurchase the rights to watch the movie or play the game I bought a long time ago? How long until they wipe my account information from their servers requiring me to repurchase everything I previously bought?

These are some serious concerns and I am not the only one.

If console makers, game makers, movie makers, and music makers are dreaming of DD to cut production costs, then they better loosen up their digitial rights management (DRM) to allow me to burn it onto a disc. Otherwise, I will be going pirate with Captain Fatbeard Cartman.

Your thoughts? Does owning a physical copy mean anything to you? Are you comfortable with not owning a physical copy? Could you care less so long as you can play it?

I like physical media. Especially for games. That's why I buy Collector's Edition of Games.

I grew up with physical media and disc based gaming and I think that's why I support physical media rather than Digital Distribution. I've yet to have downloaded a PSN game. I've yet to have downloaded a full PSP game form the store because I'd much rather buy a hard copy of the game.

Not only that but in Australia we have slow ass internet and download limits which is bullshit. So that's what's also stopping me from supporting DD.

For games I think it's great. I use Steam for most of my PC games and it means I have a backup everywhere I go:

  • If I change PC, need to format my hard drive or just get a second PC, I just download Steam, sign in and I have all my games ready for download/install and saved games for those that use Steamworks.
  • It's not tied to my hardware or some physical object that's suceptible to degradation, wear and tear.
  • If I want to play a game at release I can download the game a week earlier and simply activate it on the day of release allowing me to get in game ASAP

Complaining about digital download is like someone complaining that their computer crashes and prefering hard paper copies when they lose their word document. You can save your document multiple times and have numerous backups on the net and on USB sticks. If you only had a hard copy and there was a fire, you'll lose that document forever.

And why would you cancel something that's free?

Thinking about it, it is more than just cutting production and distribution costs. It boils down to one word: CONTROL.

If DD is the future with every game, movie, and piece of music on DD, then the control of ownership goes from the individual to whoever is owning the servers housing the digital content.

I am not some Baby Boomer luddite who is uncomfortable with "new technology." As a member of Generation Y or Millennial, I have grown up with the ever changing technology of our times, yet I still place value on physical ownership of what I purchase.

Furthermore, with monthly fees and whatnot if you decide to cancel, they could wipe your account information from their servers within a day or months, then if you ever decide to reactivate you will be forced with paying for everything all over again because they control the content.

This aspect is very concerning and is the main reason why I am not fond of DD as the future.

I love it.. I have fast internet and no download cap which could be a problem for others.. My house is much cleaner nowadays.. no more CD's lying around.. or VHS tapes and dvd cases.. I also grew up with physical media and disc based gaming butall my old games are stored away in the basement in a big box and I rarely look at them anymore (not you *hugs dreamcast*) and it's convienend that with a click of a mouse button I can get what I want.. and I'm not scared that Apple will loose my itunes account..

This may well be my last console generation anyway. I doubt the next gen will be DD only, but if it is then the current gen consoles will be my last. I'll probably pick up a 360s after the next gen starts to play the 360 exclusives, and that would be that.

If next gen still has discs I'll consider buying a next gen console at about year 4 of the gen. I bought a tad earlier than I would have liked this gen, but I couldn't resist Valkyria Chronicles any longer.

I like showing off what I bought, so I don't really like it.

Plus it makes me sometimes wonder why I even buy the game and not just download it... elsewhere, if it doesn't even come with a nice boxart and manual. It feels just dirty.

I really love to collect games so as long as we have physical copies majority of the games I buy will be physical copies. Of course I have also bought some digital releases but never with full price. Steam just has sometimes so crazy good offers that I have to buy them. Next gen will not be DD only that's for sure.

Well i have to agree with Killiana1a, you are under a lot of control and i also don't feel right having my games only on my hdd.

For example say that the next gen consoles are only DD and games are now 30gb minimum. I have my console for 2 years and i have 15 games and 5 HD movies on, but because i'm unlucky my console or hdd breaks down . I'll have to wait a month to download all my content again, especially in my country were internet connections are slow, expensive and sometimes get a cold and work very slow.

Another reason that I don't like having this strict control over the software i buy is that say Valve for some reason gets bunkrupt or their servers get attacked by aliens and giant robots with flamethrowers (very few chances that these things happen:P but I just want to state that something can go wrong with a company), i won't be able to access my content again if my hdd or console fails.

Some part of this could be solved if they provide consoles with disc burners (i doubt it, it would be too expensive), but again I will have my Blu ray R's sitting there looking ugly with my handwritting on them instead of the original discs with their cover art, manual or some collectors edition game.
Game and movie packages have their charm!

I hate Digital Distribution. I already knew that a long time ago, but after buying a PSPgo last year (yep, a PSPgo, although I already had a PSP, call me an idiot for that pls; biggest fail buy ever!) I was completely sure that I don't like it. I want to put my games into my shelf, and not only on my hard drive.
