3.3 million shipped this quarter? Even with Reach I find that to be extremely optimistic, especially as I stated with the first shipment of slims to Australia and NZ, and most likely at least some of Europe being accounted in last quarters results. IIRC there were reports of some stores in EU breaking street date around the 9th or 10th of July which would definitely mean they left factories well before June 30th. Best case scenario I can see for this quarter is 2.7 million shipped. Which would be a pretty big victory considering the shipment overlap and that's about how much they're going to sell this quarter.

Last Qtr shipments for 360 (through June) were low because MS stopped manufacturing and shipping out the old SKUs to clear inventory to be ready for the 360S introduction.  Since the 360S were so hard to get initially it is safe to say MS airshipped the initial units to get them into stores.  By July the original SKUs were harder to find and the 360S were very difficult to find.  With that in mind MS certainly has been pumping them out and getting them into the big box retailers for the boosted sales for the new SKUs and then Reach boost , Kinect boost and finally holiday boost.  I expect this Qtr shipments will be the highest non-holiday shipments the 360 every experienced.

The gap doesn't actually matter that much now. Both Sony and M$ don't make much (if anything) on hardware, their potential profits come from software, and with PS3 and 360 software sales being generally similar, the consoles are effectively on an equal footing with the gap being only a small fraction of their hardware numbers, especially as the hardware number is not equivalent to the number of active users with repeat buyers due to the consoles respective redesigns

Wow.. you have no clue.. the PS3 division had their best outcomes recently and were still 30 million in the hole and that includes money made from PS2 and personal computers.. so PS3 is still losing alot.. The whole reason Sony actually did well on fiscal earning was because Sony's Financial services division did awesome and that averaged out all the losses of the playstation division.. Converse to that Microsofts Xbox division has made a NET profit on their own the last three years.. and they have over 20 million paying users on Xbox Live paying 50 dollars a year ( that 1 Billion a year )..

Software-wise the PS3 sold 120 million less games worldwide lifetime so far versus the Xbox 360.. So software wise developers made nearly 9 Billion more dollars then they did on the PS3..

This year, PS3 has sold more software than the 360 according to VGC. So that is what matters now, I'm not talking about what has happened, but now, Sony should be interested in making money through selling software, and profits from move and its peripherals. Compared to M$ it is now selling more software and that matters more than the actual hardware numbers

Well I certainly wasn't debating that. 2.7 million would be well over their best non-holiday quarter (2.2 Q3 2008 I believe). We'll know in about a month. Regardless next quarters reports are going to be quite interesting.

@rf40928

You're misreading my statement. The SW sales on the site for EMEAA are ONLY reflective of SW sales in Europe and Australia. We have essentially 0 tracking of any software, regardless of platform, in Asia, the Middle East, Oceania, or Africa. Check game sales that saw a release in Asia before Europe or Australia. No numbers for FFXIII, Demon's Souls, Yakuza 3, Hokuto Musou, and innumerable other games that I can't recall off the top of my head.

Proudest Platinums:
1. Gran Turismo 5
2. Persona 4 Arena
3. Wipeout HD
4. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
5. Super Street Fighter 4

Isn't the gap like 3.5m according to earnings so why are you mentioning them? It's like defending floppy discs citing pen drives.

If you're going by REAL Earnings the PS3 has sold nothing.  This has been ther best year financially for the PS3 and last earnings they still lost 30 or 40 million dollars after factoring in all the cash they made with games..

And furthermore, that LOSS of 30 and 40 million includes the OFFSET of money made by the PS2, and Sony PC's.. because the Playstation Division includes Personal Computer sales.. Financially they are a big loser

One last thing on that.. if what happened with PS3 this Gen happens in the next Gen financially they will probably not make another console as it could drive Sony out of business.. What propped Sony out of fiscal crisis this year ( due ot the PS3 ) was Sony's Financial Services division which made a ton of money and put the company back in the green ( making money ).. if it wasnt for that division of Sony.. Sony would be in bankruptcy proceedings !

The PlayStation division would not be able to make Sony to go bankrupt, if it was even slightly hinting that it was going to, they'd just wait a year or two then release a new console.

When the 360 has outsold the ps3 for over 2 months now worldwide, I can understand i guess going off the last quarters earnings report BUT when the next earnings report comes in I expect the gap to be about 6 million

What do you guys think?

I think he is laughing at your estimation.

They do?

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

Probably because 1 Year ago the "gap" was over 8.5 Million big in the 360's favor.

3 Month's ago the "gap" was about 4.6 Million in favor of the 360. When it gets to shipments I'm pretty sure the gap shrinks even more.

The gap is now back up to about 5.5 Million according to VGChartz after what, 3 Month's of 360s?

While the gap may be increasing right now, in the past year the gap has been reduced by a LOT.

I can't see any other reason for why people would say the gap is shrinking.

When MS just released the 360 Slim, PS3 fans were comparing shipped consoles (not sold). This of course would mean that there is a gap of less the 5 million consoles shipped because Microsoft only started stalking the 360 Slim, and has been sold out in many regions, where PS3's are just loaded up in stores waiting to be sold.

I have friends who work at Best Buy and they say that there is usually over 100 unsold PS3's and usually the 360 Slims are still almost always nearly sold out.

On sites like N4g and GAF nobody believes that 360 is beating PS3 in europe.

P.S. The 3.5 million difference is shipments, Sony counts shipments to their warehouses as shipments, MS doesnt.

You have proof of this difference in tracked shipments?  Show us in the financial reports where we can find this difference.

what ultimate purpose does a thread like this serve other than baiting? i mean seriously this is useless to say the least. All sides have people saying a LOT of things doesn't matter who you point the finger at. I'm kinda getting tired of these opinion based  bait threads, way too many.

I think it is because those particular prognosticators are fanboys(ruining the internet and gaming), and secretly hope and care that the system they are a complete biased fanboys of, outsells the system that by nature of their fanboyism, they hate.

Call me crazy.

The gap is not narrowing, it is widening, as per this website.
