Forums - PC - You can only get deals like these on PC

I'm not going to bore with the fact that you can get 10 AAA PC Games for the price of one $60 AAA Console/PC game.

I'm not going to bore you with the fact that the best deals are only on PC, and Digital Distribution is king.

I'm just going to gloat, because there's also great PC bargains that you often get on kiosks and newsstands.

Earlier today on a newsstand, for only $10, I bought a PC Game Pack which contained:

  • Far Cry 2: Fortune's Edition
  • Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
  • World in Conflict: Complete Edition

FC2 includes the Fortune DLC (which alone costs $5 on XBL), and there's also the SC game. But the true gem is the complete edition of World in Conflict, which also contains the expansion World in Conflict: Soviet Assault.

PC Gaming keeps saving me money.

Maybe it's to compensate the fact that you have to upgrade your PC hardware every other year or so, and it gets expensive?

So hardware is more expensive, but the games are cheaper? =P I don't really know, just throwing the thought out there.

Or.. Maybe you're just making stuff up? Maybe you haven't used a PC to play games in a while and don't know what you're talking about? I last upgraded my computer 3 years ago, and it runs all those games (and any game released today) just fine. I actually know what I'm talking about, and I'm throwing the truth out there.

Whoa buddy, no need to get so defensive. I was just commenting off the top of my head. I know I've heard a lot of people complaining about the upkeep for PC gaming. I clearly stated at the end that I was just throwing the suggestion out there, so no need to act like I stuck a 12 foot pole up your behind. =P

You don't have to do anything. I'm still playing everything just fine on an 8800GT from 2007. However, if I wanted to I could upgrade. That's the beauty of PC gaming- choice.

Well it's more choice than consoles, yes, but there is some point where you will have to upgrade if you want to play the latest games, so it's not all choice. =P

How much do you spend upgrading your PC and how often do you do it? Do you build your own or buy a premade one?

I bought a pre-made one for about £750 in 2007 from Cyberpower in the UK. I need a PC for development work but I also wanted to be able to play games, so I spent an extra £150 over what I would have paid on an 8800GT graphics card.

Since then, the only upgrades I've made are £40 for an extra 2gigs of RAM, about the same for a copy of Windows 7, £100 for an extra 1TB hard drive and £25 for a 360 controller- apart from the latter, none of those upgrades were strictly for gaming.

I can still play just about any game at 1680x1050 and medium-high detail, bar Crysis. The tendency towards multi-plaftorm development has meant the 'good' lifespan of my graphics card has been extended, and I expect it to last at least another 18 months.

So, it looks like I'll be getting the best part of 4-5 years of good quality gaming for an extra £150 outlay, plus the cost of a 360 controller. So far, not only have I earned many times the overall cost of the PC through my development work, I've also more than recouped the extra £150 outlay because the games I buy are often £10-15 cheaper than the console equivalents.

For me, PC gaming works out significantly cheaper than (HD) console gaming would have done. Obviously everyone's circumstances are different, but it is true that getting into PC gaming has never been cheaper than it is now and is a great deal for many.
