Forums - Microsoft - Tsunoda: "Kinect sales will blow away iPad"

"The preorders have been really strong. As far as what we're looking at for Holiday, this is going to be stuff that'll blow away any of the sales you've seen with iPad," says Tsunoda, when asked what he though about the device's chances of success.

"The Xbox 360 is already selling better than the Wii and Sony right now. Kinect's really just going to boost that to a whole new level."

Very confident Tsunoda is.

Umm... the Ipad had already sold 3 million units back in June, by now it's probably significantly more.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

Why's he even comparing it to iPad? iPad is a stand alone multimedia device costing (here) about $800 for the WiFi version and >$1000 for the 3G version.

Even if Kinect outsold iPad 3:1 it would still be meaningless. It's like saying DVD players are going to outsell a laptops this holiday.

Having said that I'd still be surprised if Kinect unit sales were higher than iPad. If that did happen it means Kinect would probably also outsell 360. Of course Tsunoda isn't going to say that. Anyway, who's going to check up on him in January? So he can say things like this safe in the knowledge that no one is going to be able to easily check to see whether he was right or not. And everyone's going to forget that he said it anyway.

Well I think he is going based on their Holiday sales estimates. They expect the Kinect to sell 3 million within it's first 2 months while the iPad sold 2 million within it's first 2 months.

There is many problems with his horrible prediction and use of the words "Blow Away" though.

First of all he fails to realize that the iPad released around April while the Kinect is getting a Holiday launch.

He also forgets that Kinect starts at $150 and the iPad started at $499.

He also forgets that he is comparing worlwide sales yet if I am not mistaken the iPad didn't launch outside of the US until May 30th, almost 2 months after it's initial release.

So Tsunoda is basically saying that worldwide holiday sales for Kinect will "blow away" US only non-holiday sales for the iPad.

Yeah, that's real fair, not to mention that even if it does sell 3 million that in no way "blows away" the iPad's sales in any way, shape or form.

Anyone disagree?

No.

I have a feeling Tsunoda is being paid as a future scapegoat. By being the one to make all these ridiculous claims, he can be the one to take the fall when/if it doesn't work out. I would be assuming of course that he has already agreed to this and is being compensated well.

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Total marketing blurb obviously. Of course most of you missed the point here which is not to compare dates or products or a launch it is say hey you know the Ipad that had such a fantastic launch well hey Kinect had a better one, yes beneath the surface this falls apart but the headline is just that.

I have no doubt that Kinect will sell well in fact I think the recent announcement of 3 million is a smokescreen as they expect it to be actually higher.

I struggle with Tsunoda not what he says because actually in interviews he comes over well but please somebody tell him he looks a Dick. Major Neilsen is still be favourite Microsoft public mouthpeice for me.

Winner of the 2010 VGC Holiday sales prediction thread with an Average 1.6% accuracy rating. I am indeed awesome.

Kinect as seen by PS3 owners ...if you can pick at it   ...post it ... Did I mention the 360 was black and Shinny? Keeping Sigs obscure since 2007, Passed by the Sig police 5July10.

Letsa enter the Official Kinect Hype Machine dudes and dudetes!

Above: still the best game of the year.

This would be cool if it actually happened. I would be all for it.

I understand when people quote sales prediction threads made officially on quarterly reports or similar, but why would anyone be talking about what Tsunoda is predicting, and then discuss it as serious predictions?

That guy is high half of the time he is presenting...I assume he is high 100% of the time he is not on camera.

I'm sorry, but this is just awesome.

Best Buy’s CEO has hinted that Apple’s iPad is taking market share from laptops.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Brian Dunn said that the retailers internal estimates suggested that “iPad had cannibalized sales from laptop PCs by as much as 50 per cent.”

The revelations come as Best Buy reveals that while sales of larger items such as televisions had fallen dramatically, consumer interest in mobile gadgets like Apple’s iPad and Amazon’s Kindle had risen, leading the retailer to generate a 61 per cent boost in profits for the second quarter.

Gonna be hard to blow that away.
