Forums - Gaming - Gabe Newell: 'next-gen game engines will be ten times harder'

@oniyide, i really wouldnt say they dropped support before ps2, it was more like almost went bankrupt, :P, lol.

its gonna be very interesting as to what next console generation is gonna do, the leaps in performance each generation is huge and getting larger.

next generation i can see all console's doing 3d, and effortlessly in 1080p, running with insane CPU's and GPU's. and prbly with motion controls all over the market.

@MaxwellGT  I didnt mention SNES/GENS cause I didnt know who sold better and there so close to power and price??? that I didnt think it was worth mentioning

Game Gear was portable and more expensive just cause it was huge didnt mean you couldnt carry it. I carried it fine in my pocket (just had to make sure nothing else was in there)

I dont know about library for DS cause half those games suck but there are alot of them I could see how someone who is not really a gamer would get bamboolzed by all those titles. PSP is still more expensive

PS1 DC did not go against PS2. Sega cut support for that system b4 Sony even dropped PS2. so my original statement stands PS1>DC.  as for library, same thing with DS it had way more titles than N64 cheaper too. ok so maybe # of games have something to do with it BTW who were these idiots who think PS2 was more powerful than GC???? what are they on? Im not biased I had both systems but the multiplats ran better on GC FACT Sonic Heroes Soul Calibur 2 King Kong Ultimate Spider-man. Etc.

Lol wrong on so many levels, Game Gear took a crap load of batteries and was dead within a few hours, that is not portable that is you can easily carry a console you can sometimes play without an AC adapter lol its not like you even had rechargeable batteries to cut that cost back then.

PSP is actually cheaper than the most expensive of the DS systems and still it sells better lol

Dreamcast went directly against the PS2, the war was short as Dreamcast utterly stopped selling when the PS2 came out in Japan and from there they left the console market, Dreamcast was the start of last generation, just like Saturn was the start of the one before that, if you don't use these as parameters then SEGA is competing with itself at one point lulz Saturn competing with Gen?  lol no, DC competing with Saturn? nope again.

To back up this point  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_video_game_consoles_(sixth_generation)

Also why are you attacking the DS' library?  Realistically over half of the library for every console has below average titles, but the fact remains the DS outsold PSP even at launch and early adopters were the core handheld market, buying gamer games and making up that record breaking online user base the "Brain Age" market came later when those titles took off and solidified the DS' dominance in the market.

Not trying to be mean here, so don't take offense, but with some things like the Dreamcast remark, that's simply not true and you should read up a little.

@maxwellgt2000  I did read up on the DC and several people already filled me in I was getting my US and Japan release dates mix up.  AS for GG yeah the battery life did suck, bad. But I could still put it in my pocket so it was portable as far as im concerned.  I wasnt attacking DS library, I have that system, I just dont care for the library  I think the PSP has better games, just my opinion.  Dont know your getting your pricing but PSP by itself is 170 and DSi is 150

XL is 170 right now it just had a price drop, it has been 190, 20 dollars more than the PSP, and almost as expensive as one of the PSP bundle deals lol still it has sold well its just the demand for the product.

@MaxwellGT

The Nickle-Cadmium rechargeable battery was invented in 1899.  To say that rechargable batteries didn't exist when the Game Gear released is to say you weren't old enough to have a clue what was going on when the Game Gear released.

Then again, a lot of people in this thread have shown they don't really know what was going on in the 1990's (let alone the 1890's), so I'm not going to condemn you for that.

Yeah, but it was commercialized in the 90s so it might not have been very widespread/popular at the GG's time

Nor did they work well and they were expensive, my grandma actually had a recharge station and some batteries, but honestly it was crap from my experience.  Maybe she just had duds/used up if someone else had a different experience, but even with rechargeable batteries the damn thing died fast... recharge some batteries for hours just to have them die in 2-3 hours in your gamegear, that's hardly convenient and most people would rather buy new batteries than wait on the others to charge.

Sorry I wasn't being clear earlier honestly I was up for 24 hours straight and VGC was helping me stay awake at the time, what I was meaning was really rechargeable batteries weren't that viable of a solution back then, it just didn't happen, most people I knew with a gamegear just used the AC adapter, personally I wanted one cause I thought it was cool as hell but the gamegear became scarce by the time I had the money and so I bought my brick gray gameboy and a shit ton of games lol

I do think hes exagerating slighty for effect TBH.

Tease.

If he's right, this is great for gamers.

If past generations have taught us anything, it's that the leading console of each generation is the one that had the best graphics.
