The Nickle-Cadmium rechargeable battery was invented in 1899.  To say that rechargable batteries didn't exist when the Game Gear released is to say you weren't old enough to have a clue what was going on when the Game Gear released.

Then again, a lot of people in this thread have shown they don't really know what was going on in the 1990's (let alone the 1890's), so I'm not going to condemn you for that.

Yeah, but it was commercialized in the 90s so it might not have been very widespread/popular at the GG's time

Nor did they work well and they were expensive, my grandma actually had a recharge station and some batteries, but honestly it was crap from my experience.  Maybe she just had duds/used up if someone else had a different experience, but even with rechargeable batteries the damn thing died fast... recharge some batteries for hours just to have them die in 2-3 hours in your gamegear, that's hardly convenient and most people would rather buy new batteries than wait on the others to charge.

Sorry I wasn't being clear earlier honestly I was up for 24 hours straight and VGC was helping me stay awake at the time, what I was meaning was really rechargeable batteries weren't that viable of a solution back then, it just didn't happen, most people I knew with a gamegear just used the AC adapter, personally I wanted one cause I thought it was cool as hell but the gamegear became scarce by the time I had the money and so I bought my brick gray gameboy and a shit ton of games lol
