Forums - General - Samsung Galaxy Tab vs iPad, Help!!!

Hey guys, I'm trying to help my mother decide which to get. She just found out about the Galaxy Tab this morning, and she's been questioning getting an iPad for months. The only things she disliked about the iPad are that you can't directly load something onto it from an outside source (apparently you can only DL from the internet) and the iPad doesn't take pictures.

The great news about Galaxy Tab is that it does both of those! I've looked up and found a comparison chart between the two right here: http://www.pcworld.com/zoom?id=204779&page=1&zoomIdx=1

I'm not much of a tecchie, but it seems like the Galaxy Tab blows away the iPad. However, I do know that these charts can sometimes be misleading. Does anyone have further advice to give me? Is the Mac OS going to work much better than the Android one?

Is the iPad really so far outclassed by this new Tabloid?

The advice I would give anyone at this point in time is to wait a couple of months before buying any tablet ... At the moment only a handful of manufacturers who will produce tablets have announced their products and even fewer have actually brought them to market.

I could be wrong but I suspect by this time next year you will have tablets that range anywhere from $150 to $1,000 that represent a wide variety of capabilities, features and sizes; and someone who buys today may end up paying more for and/or having a tablet that doesn't meet their needs well because they were impatient.

Um... the galaxy tab is rumored to be 699 euro's.... that's 900 dollars..

Weird, my mom was under the impression it was going to be around 200, upwards of 300 dollars in the USA. Are you guessing the price merely based on the euro value? On one hand, it makes sense, but it's not always the best thing to go by. I guess we'll see when they reveal more info.

So it's best to just wait until next year to buy, then? Oh well.. I was thinking of getting one for her as a Christmas present, I suppose it can wait.

Yeah I'm guessing the dollar price from the european price.. http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/02/samsung-galaxy-tab-reported-to-retail-at-699-and-799-in-europe/

200 dollars seems to be a  price when you get a 3g internet contract with it..

people can wait forever for the next better thing,

i say get her one,if you can afford it and if she wants what the galaxy offers then get that,

i doubt many people are too upset with what they buy/recieve,there is always something elser/better

double up

i'm having real probs with vgc today

I would say wait.

Though in the longer term, I would recommend an Android tablet ahead of the iPad, that is partially because of the choice of hardware that will come LATER. The 2nd generation of these devices will be much better in every way.

Having said that, as far as I can tell, the main advantage of the iPad is the screen and potentially the apps, but the Galaxy tab also has the features as mentioned in the OP, and Android is on the rise and so its apps are certainly catching up. One concern at the moment may be that I don't think there are going to be many apps designed for just the Tab, whereas there are a limited selection of iPad designed apps, though most of them are just prettier versions of the smaller apps

The other main consideration is the physical size of the devices. Personally, I think they are both rubbish sizes, and I think my 4" android smart phone and 16" laptop cover every need I have, but others may see otherwise. The iPad is 10" and the Galaxy Tab is 7", so the question is, which one is more practical in this situation

Read an article on Yahoo today and it mentioned that the Galaxy will go for $200-$300.

If true, definitely go with the Galaxy.
