Gears is third party, that shouldn't be there silly!  I also feel like Zelda is on the low side for mega hits, it's big but it's difficulty or something might be holding it back.  And Duck Hunt isn't really a franchise.

But yes, most of their high rate is Miyamoto's doing.  I think Sony will be happy when he retires, as you say.

I guess I hashed it out a little too quickly.

Miyamoto is one man, but hes a freak of the indusry. How many massive franchises can be attributed directly or indirectly to the man?

Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, F-Zero, Pikmin, Animal Crossing and the Wii Series.  I also discovered he was knighted in France in 2006.  I'm sorry, guys a freak.  Sony can't stop him, but kudos to them for doing better than anyone else. lol

Pokemon as well, right?

Sony doesn't do amazing things first, that's why. Their games usually consist of ideas borrowed from somewhere else and mixed together. It's not surprising that Uncharted was compared to Tomb Raider and Gears of War a lot. Why did Gears of War do so much better? Because it redefined its genre and ever since then other TPS try to mimic its gameplay. God of War followed Devil May Cry. Killzone followed Halo.

Why didn't LittleBigPlanet or Heavy Rain become mega blockbusters? Because they are not amazing to most gamers. The thing that's new in LBP is the extensive level editor, but most gamers rather play than create, so they don't care. Heavy Rain is more of an interactive movie and that's only amazing to a small subset of gamers.

Of course, this explanation works in reverse as well and that's why Gran Turismo is so big while it's imitators never come close in sales. Forza would be the most popular one and hardly anyone remembers Konami's Enthusia Professional Racing anymore.

If you want to hit it big then you either have to do something first or something that hasn't been done in a long time by anyone else.

There's so much wrong with this post. LBP and Heavy Rain not amazing to most gamer's. Heavy Rain did pretty amazing for what type of game it was. LBP did pretty amazing for it being a new IP. No one thought it would even sell a million copies. What other games copied LBP. Gears of War although a great game,it really did'nt redifine anything.

That was actually Satoshi Tajiri.  Funnily enough, in Japan Red/Blue the main character was called Satoshi and I believe the rival was named Shigeru.  Apparently he was his protege.  Miyamoto mentored him and guided him therough the creative process.  So indirectly, he helped with that too.  Unbelievable.

Why does sony have to have another mega franchise. As long as the game's are good and they sell good enough to warrant a sequel, that's all that should matter. Not every good franchise can sell 10 million copies. lol

i dont agree with may i think to let go crash bandicoot it biggest mistake as it was becoming a famous game and each new part had better sales than previous one

It seems Naughty Dog wanted to do something else... Which would probably have led to the same outcome as we got. Maybe Sony would have found another studio that could have made the series even better and more popular but I doubt it. Haven't done much research about it though, so...

Which reminds me, I wonder what Halo will become after Bungie. And what will Call of Duty become after Infinity Ward.

Universal owned the  crash bandicoot ip not sony not ND they got ND to develop it and when Sony bought ND Universal got travellers tales to make the cb games

P.S. Imagine if Miyamoto as ked for like a 50 million dollar pay raise.  Nintendo would have to say yes, he has them by the you know what lol.  "I only make ALL your big games...anyway..." lmao.

apparently Miyamoto's pay packet is nearly twice that of the  nintendo presidents thats with out bonuses and how lucky was Miyamoto to be taken under Gunpei Yokoi's wing in the early days.

Wow, nice.  The president's probably like a lame duck, at this point Miyamoto does whatever the hell he wants, he's like the real leader lol.

So this thread is now no longer "Why does Sony fail at making a mega franchise," it is "How can one man be so relatively proficient at it while no one else can, including the rest of Nintendo." lol

And even HE has made missteps.  At the end of the day, it's just damn hard.  Any company should be happy with even one mega franchise  (Sony, Microsoft), and he has blessed them with many. End of story.

This had better be a joke.

It's not even remotely accurate in most accounts.  Do you think that Gears of War was the first third person shooter?   Or that Devil May Cry was the first 'slash em up' ?    Killzone followed Halo but Halo followed a myriad of other games.

Gran Turismo certainly wasn't the first racing game.

Little Big Planet did sell well, but not spectacular.  Yet NSMB Wii sold spectacular.  Why?   Little Big Planet had rights to the multi-player / platformer far before it did.     Heavy Rain is a one of a kind type of gameplay experience.

If it makes the Sony fans (me included) feel any better, when Miyamoto retires Nintendo will have a tougher time than they do now.  However, they will always have that old gang of ips to back them up.  So there's that....lol
