Response to the OP

Most JRPG are easy because of the abstraction of the evolution of the JRPG. JRPG are inspired by Wizardry, Ultima... really early cRPG. These CRPG were just another form of D&D. So they just abstracted the D&D elements. Which are

Random World Encounters
This isn't entirely true. It was just pretty common that the Players would have an overworld combat situation. The idea of these "random" or meaningless fights had 3 jobs. First they were to make the game a little more exciting. The other to waste resources before the big encounter. Offer XP.

Dungeons and Boss Fights
The early D&D Dungeons really didn't make much sense. Dungeon layout had no common sense. They were designed to make the game fun or kill players. Usually by sticking in LOTS of combat and Traps.

Both these Elements sum up to the point that when you get to the Boss your group is battered and tension is at it's highest. Try to get players to think.

Well when all of this was abstracted computer game developers relied on the cheap gimmick of random encounters. Rather than trying to mimic the Dungeon Masters judgement. The random Encounter had a negative effect. Groups needed way's to keep their HP topped up do to the amount of random encounters and their just too many random encounters.

So when the Japanese were inspired to remake the RPG their style. They didn't copy the behavioral effect's of the RPG. They copied the simple trope of the RPG. As time goes by the JRPG focused more on Story than Combat Fun. That's why JRPG combat are not really memorable, it is grindy and easy.

Personally I would really like to see a return to classic RPG design. Where Combat is supposed to be lethal and have significant meaning. I suspect that will never happen though. It's all about delivering damage and burst(oops I mean Surge) healing. Though there will be exceptions. Like 7th Saga. that really was difficult at times.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Around the Network

Try playing Ys collection (or something like that) in Nightmare mode. It has the first two Ys.

Above: still the best game of the year.

Go buy ATLUS rpg's for the DS.  Good stuff.

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

Etrian Odyssey

Dark Spire on DS might be good. I hear it's tough.

It also got Classic Game Room HD Game of the Year for 2009.
