Forums - Gaming - RPG lacking difficulty

i dont know the older rpgs from the snes era were pretty boring to me. i usually dont have a huge problem with any rpgs besides bosses.

RPGs lack difficulty (specifically jRPGs) because they've barely evolved in the past decade or two. We're still on this whole "Use fire on ice enemies" deal and when it's that simple, it's hard to make the game difficult. The genre needs something new for it to bring difficulty to the table. Also, in most RPGs, with enough prep, you can usually take on anything, so the only way to make the game difficult is to impose your own limitations. The problem is, if devs try to throw in something tricky, the gamers could complain calling it cheap and annoying. At the end of the day, people want to have fun, so don't expect the formula to change too much or too drastically any time soon.

The don't make 'em like the 7th Saga anymore. That SNES game was ridiculously tough. Going through a dungeon consisted of me mumbling "please no enemy encounter, please no enemy encounter."

They just need to make a balance. Say, 90% of the encounters, you should be able to beat. Meanwhile, the 10% would post somewhat a wipeout risk and the best option would be to run away.

I remember renting 7th Saga way back and I couldn't get anywhere with it, LOL. Mostly because it was so slow.

Yeah, the slowness of 7th Saga was one of my put-offs from that, also. And it really annoyed me that if you attack physically, you have to defend every other turn to do any real damage, but the enemy didn't have this limitation.

I don't remember any hard to finish rpg since Icewind Dale, Baldurs Gate etc.

jrpg sometimes are a bit better but unfortunatly you usually has option of ginding till enemies are squashed below your boots like bugs.

Even persona 3 where you have clock running out which prevents you from grinding all the time still is pretty easy.

Have you played Glory of Heracles? Enemy encounters usually consist of  <5 enemies who constantly have tricks up their sleeves, battles are large scale in their majority.

You should try out some PC rpgs if you're looking for a challenge.

That one is easy, too.

Demon's Souls is a RPG that has a higher difficulty level than many current RPGs, but that's on the PS3.  The Monster Hunter series is also pretty difficult.  Two great examples of slightly more difficult RPGs.

Eh, FF IV DS is pretty much the toughest I've played so far. I was put-off at the beginning, but then I began to appreciate my hard work in beating those damn dungeons.

But I know what you're problem is, Galaki. You're too good by now.Try hitting yourself in the head and then play an RPG. That'll work!
