As an american I have always called them buffalo. I've heard bison before but never knew they were the same beast. Buffalo is what they should have used as that is what most americans call them.

they aren't the same beast. the term is used interchangeably but its like calling a cuban mexican

lol you will find it amusing to know how many Americans call anyone from South America as mexicans..

no joke

I know they are different, what I meant was that I did not know when people said buffalo/bison in the US they are talking about the same beast.

Living in socal I would believe it. Basically from what I have hard in So Cal and Arizona any one from below the US is mexican, and in Florida they are all Cubans! Lol

I guess the real mistake in the game is that there actually are buffalos/bisons.

Red dead redemption is set in the year 1911, and at that time there was pretty much not a single bison left in the USA. Within just a few decades in the 19th century, dozens of million bisons were killed, and by 1902 there were only 23 left in whole north America. A guy called George Bird Grinnell saved the species by taking them to a safe area - if it hadn't been for this guy, the bison would have been distinct by 1911.

Those are all bison heads:

They are commonly called American buffalo, so it's not really a mistake. The misnomer has taken hold. Deal with it!

like American Football :P It has Football in it but it's not Football....but yea I see what ya mean

The game begins with a kick just like that other football

the game calls bison buffalo , but that is incorrect as buffalo are found in asia and bison are found in north america. you would think developers would know more about animals. also i know of many actual native americans that make the same mistake

It doesn't matter what they are, the people in the West in that time period called them buffalo.  It would be a mistake to have them call them bison.

Thanks for the edu on bison, just an fyi Bison is the singular and plural form, no need for bisons

That's why there are only 20 buffalos/bisons in the game and you get an achievement/trophy for killing all of them.

just to let you all know it is important to call them bison. in middle school on a test where the answer was bison i answered buffalo and got it wrong. most american confuse the two but it isn't the excepted term
