This is excellent news.  A wide open universe should be created first, then a story should be written within it.

Just like Star Wars.

this approach seems a bit weird. im sure it will turn out fantastic but he shoulda just focused on both

Do you know why JRPG's from the SNES era are stilled help in hi regards? because they followed this same format. This is the perfect way to create a a grand RPG, JRPG's that focus on super realistic graphics and over convoluted story lines and a abundance in CGI are always lacking.

Yeah, i'm sure FF6 and Chrono Trigger are still remembered today because of their battle systems, and not because of their epic soundtracks, great storylines, great characters and overall atmosphere.

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

edit. I don't understand what I said.

I agree with others, I'd figure FFV and its crazy job system would have been mentioned. Heck even FFVIII seemed more gameplay focused then story.
