Forums - Gaming - Wii has half the amount of games coming as PS3/360

Are we actually going to brag and argue about the shovelware shift from Wii to HD?

Wii already has more games and more backwards compatibility than any other console out right now, so a huge shift in the 5th year of a generation won't make much of a difference, especially if it's all party games.  Everybody's already figured out what their favorite party games are over the past 4-5 years.

The other systems are only getting huge chunks of new games because they're launching Kinect and Move, with 10 Just Dance clones, 10 Wii Fit clones, and 10 Wii Sports clones each.  For comparison, Wii Motion launched with one Wii Sports clone, two tennis games, and a golf game.  The best game got to rise to the top, and it's sold over 15 million by now.  If you launch a controller with tons and tons of games that are barely different from each other, you're not going to get a huge breakout success like that.  Except maybe Dance Central... but it's still only 2 players instead of 4.

I'm sure this limitation will hurt Dance Central sales mainly because of the new Just Dance that will feature a mulplayer up to 8 people at the same time. And I'm sure it will hurt even the Kinect sales, only two players at the same time? C'mom Microsoft are kidding us?

Considering how the generation started (no 3rd party support due to every analyst saying the Wii was going to epicly fail) I'm not shocked the trend has continued till now. Now, I had hoped and even said that 3rd party support would pick up, it hasn't (significantly).

Now, from a business perspective, I can't figure out why some of the larger multiplatform companies haven't put significant support into the Wii. Putting only crap games on the market leader is a waste of resources especially when just one 3rd party could move in with significant support and pick up all the sales that Nintendo doesn't take which would be like being the only legitimate publisher on the PS3 or X360.

The Iphone gets games the Wii doesn't, there's more to this than just decision made in 2005, it's been 4 years, you can't tell me it's because they thought the PS3 was going to be the leader, that worked in 2007.

No one ever said developers are smart. That is why so many of them are bankrupt. They can't figure out the industry any better than the analysts and lose money because of it.

After seeing the lackluster performance of Battle Road Victory I'm not sure how big of a success Inazuma 11 will be. At the moment the holidays in Japan seem to favor the Wii but if Sony or a third party drop a bomb at TGS that's going to change rather quickly. And depending on how may GT5 bundles there are, I'm assuming it's going to be like the Lightning Bundle around 200k, Sony basically has November in the bag. And Trestres, you're missing RDR from that list. Not sure what category it should go in though. I think it has a pretty good shot at over 100k, maybe even over 200k.

DQBRV is actually doing a swell if not better than the PS2 iterations. nothing bad abt its numbers, only expectations were higher

Yeah, after looking at the PS2 iterations I have agree. My expectations were just a bit higher because of Swords. Speaking of which, has DQBR been confirmed for a western release?

Proudest Platinums:
1. Gran Turismo 5
2. Persona 4 Arena
3. Wipeout HD
4. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
5. Super Street Fighter 4

Is it surprise someone anymore? when you have game franchise spawn on all consoles and even iphone but the wii (SFIV, Assassin creed) how could you expect the things to be different.

But as usual, what is making the nintendo console stand out is the 1st party game, not 3rd party and Nintendo as some really interesting games for the next months (Metroid: another M, Kirby epic Yarn, Wii Party, Donkey Kong: Returns , Zelda: Skyward Sword) that's enough to keep the nintendo core gamer busy (and less rich :p).

But we must first concentrate ourselves on the way to entertain people, for video games to live. Else, it's a world where sales representative will win, which has as effect to kill creativity. I want to say to the creators all around the world:"Courage, Dare!". Shigeru Miyamoto.

It's because the Wii's casual market is easy to develop cheap shovelware for. 3rd parties won't put extra resoruces into making games for the Wii when putting out a game like Carnival Games rakes in massive amounts of dough.

The Wii is a victim of its own success in the casual market, and we're definitely not gonna see good 3rd party support for it, and most likely not for its successor.

I am tried of reading drivel that derides the "casual" market.

Wii owners like different/unique experiences.

But how many games that (a) were not well-received and (b) were NOT first in their genre to market have done well on the Wii?

Some unusual games have done well. But only if they met this criteria (and were generally functional).

For example, everyone's favorite Carnival Games has sold 3.69M. But the imitators (Six Flags at 0.21M and Wonder World Amusement Park at 0.07M) generally tanked. Poorly received, me-too games  -- casual gamers know what not to buy.

Also, support from a big third-party does not necessarily mean success. Activision has 86 titles on the Wii. A total of 10 have sold over 1M but two dozen (24) have not sold 10K. (I own two from each category). If you look at the lower selling games, many are rueful mini-game collections or tired sequels to a game that sold well at the beginning.

In other words, what flummoxes third-parties  on the Wii is that the casual gamer actually seems to have a much more discerning pallet as they tend not to buy copy-cat games and often do not buy sequels.  This is not necessarily true on the other systems, so you can release the game two or three basic game types and know that an existing successful IP will continue to sell well.

For casual shovelware the Wii is a one time thing. How are those shovelware sequels going for you? Yeah...

Using the Wii as a standard for its successor is laughable too.

Define "shovelware" for me. But just to give you a quick run down of big selling sequels to party games and stuff like that...

Cooking Mama: Cook Off - 1.49M
Game Party 2 - 1.45M
Carnival Games: Mini Golf - 1.19M
Disney Sing It: Pop Hits - 0.94M
Hasbro Family Game Night 2 - 0.81M
Wii Party - 0.74M
My Sims Agents - 0.71M
Deca Sports 2 - 0.6M
EA Active More Workouts - 0.57M
Petz Dogz 2 - 0.51M
My Sims Racing - 0.43M

That's just a quick scan of the top 200 games on Wii. These are just sequels. These do not include games mimicing TV shows or random generic fitness games. I hear a lot of Wii fans saying games with decent production values that sell 400k on Wii have been a success. So games with pretty much rock bottom production values that sell 400k must be a goldmine. The Wii's shovelware problem is far from over Soriku. If the sequels don't sell as well then they will release new shovelware. We've seen it since the Wii launched.

As far as I see, the PS3s taking a lot of the Wiis 3rd party support right now. 360s sat where it should be... but PS3 is exceeding, I suppose this is attributed in part to ties from the last generation, new motion controller and developers finally adapting to being able to develop competently on the cell processor. That accompanied by Nintendo driving third partys away, and Microsoft not having the consumers to market Eastern games towards.

I expect a stream of Wii - PS3 ports from publishers like Capcom too, looking to make a quick buck. Even if the original Wii publisher, won't publish the PS3 version - publishers such as Konami have proven there willing to do so. (no more heroes)

All you're saying is that copy-catted shovelware doesn't sell.

Yes, Wii owners have brains, and yes, they won't buy shovelware clones.

But shovelware still sells. It's cheap to make, and by playing their cards correctly, the company can profit big time on it.

3rd parties aren't going to spend a ton of resources on some amazing game when it has a less likely chance to profit than shovelware.

Funny thing you saying that...

Also consider the PS2. A console is defined by it's library.
