Forums - Nintendo - Why Red Steel 2 didn't sell (interview)

If you get food poisoning from a restaurant chain how likely are you to enter into another one of their restaurants? Even if it is a different physical restaurant and everyone tells you it is much better the negative reaction you had may be enough to keep you away. Whether it was their intention or not, the stream of mediocre to outright terrible first person shooters that were released on the Wii for the first couple of years of its life probably convinced countless gamers that either "First person shooters are garbage" or "The Wii can’t have a decent first person shooter"

At this point in time anyone who wanted a FPS on the Wii has probably played several poor games and will be (very) difficult to motivate any of them to buy a FPS.

I think piracy has become even more rampant. Games targetted toward a casual market are still likely to sell cuz casuals don't deal up too much with piracy. Where I live, EVERYONE has pirated games. 'Cept me.

There is a more logical reason than playing the blame game.

There is, I wanted Monster Hunter 3 instead.

Same Here !

Me three!

I think it's quite intersting that Monster Hunter Tri has almost twice the sales of Red Steel 2 (excluding Japan).

Nonsense, its selling at par with TvC. And Wii fans consider that a big hit!

Any talk of why NMH2 bombed so hard? Or what about S&P2?

There must be some reason all these core games bomb on the Wii. Or we should atleast hear an excuse.

I bet you forgot to add these sales to TvC: http://www.vgchartz.com/game.php?id=27320

Well I don't see why I should. Its technically a different game. But even if you include them, sales are still modest.

Its funny, people said TvC didn't sell great because of the anime characters being obscure outside of Japan. But even the Japanese didn't really care about that game.

In my humble opinoin the game just wasn't very good, they went a bad direction with the controls, and the Easy Operation controls shouldn't even be in there. Its a core game but they did too much to turn core gamers off.

I know there's some people here who might disagree with me, but aside from the 1:1 sword-fighting Red Steel was crap IMO.   No online, no multi-player.  Long load times.  Poor story.  Poor game design (goto hub, load, get mission, load, run around tiny area fighting thugs, go back to hub, load, repeat).  Repetitive. No depth.

If they stuck that same s--t on HD consoles it'd have sold even worse and been critically condemned.

RS2 was a one trick pony and not worth full price, maybe $20.  TvC, MH3 on the other hand definitely were and came out about the same time.

They still can make a port for ps3 move... (where the hardcore gamers are)

Personally I love TvC but I'm not disagreeing with you.   They gave 'core' gamers SFIV.   But as I suck ass in SFIV as I'm too lazy (and disinterested) to master to the characters, I'm ever so grateful for TvsC which make me feel like a champ but still has a ton of depth.     Also, Wii lacks enough buttons to do a fighting games justice and waggle shouldn't be in a precision fighter so TvsC was an excellent fighter for Wii using what buttons are practically available.      I wouldn't call TvsC casual, but I would say it's a bridge title, like Brawl.

People make SFIV a lot more complicated than it really is. I just use a bunch of Fierce Attacks and Special Attacks and I hold up pretty well online. You don't have to be master to enjoy that game, you just have to pay a little attention to what you're doing.

Also, I don't consider a SFIV a game released for core gamers. Its a game that stayed true to the long running series. TvC went a new direction instead of appealing to long time fans. It may have been a critical success, but clearly its not what the fans wanted.

I only played it for a few minutes. I really don't care about online or multiplayer, just wanted a solid experience. But I agree with you about the terrible game design. It was very repetitive in the few minutes I played and not worth the full price. Why do I have to return to the hub everytime???  While playing it I had the same feeling I got while playing Madworld.... "this is a budget title"
