Forums - Website Topics - gamrFeed comments

The site is too fragmented.

Before literally EVERYTHING was on one page, so we used to click on news articles (a big list of them) while we could see the hot topics in the forums.

Now most users STAY on GamrConnect and basically use the forums as their source of news.

One possible way to offset this is have an automatic system where every news piece and review gets a thread on Connect, that way if people care they can go to the original article and if they want to talk about it they have an easier way to do that.

...

I actually use the main hub vgchartz.com as the site I stay on, I don't just sit in GamrConnect because I like everything on one page.  I think the biggest reason for the lack of comments on GamerFeed is a two part thing, if I remember correctly right after VGChartz 3.0 launched we actually couldn't comment on news stories.  I think people just got used to not being able to do it for a while and using the forums instead and now it has mostly just remained that way.

Also like Darth said lots of people just stay in Gamrconnect and don't even visit the front page so many people might not even really see the stories.

Yeah this is the feeling we have - that we've actually done too good a job of fragmenting things now that users are literally staying on one site or the other!

The idea was that the current homepage (www.vgchartz.com) is pretty much the same as the old one now in terms of layout and functionality so we assumed that people would go back to using it just like they did on the old site but still have the ability to use the individual sites to get more "depth". We are working on a number of new menu options and layouts so hopefully this will make the site feel a little more together again...

Cool that should definetely help!

And I'm mainly on the hub page too now, so really people should be commenting more in news stories now!

@Torillian

That could help, but what if people post an article on that news story in the forums before the story is written on GamrFeed?

it happens, and then the thread could die a lonely death or maybe the mods would lock it as a repost

...

@Torillian: Unless there's a dedicated forum for it, we would be slowly drowned in Feed articles.

@ioi: I type "gamr" and Firefox fills out the rest of the address for gamrconnect automatically. I use VGChartz for news once a day or so, but my comment-posting habits haven't changed so I'm not the person to ask about it.

ioi,

I am a frequent reader, seldom a poster, but I thought I might be able to add some insight from that perspective.

www.vgchartz.com is bookmarked on my browser, and when 3.0 launched I was lost.  I didn't know where the news stories, and reader posted threads had gone, and I wasn't too interested in surfing from site to site to find them...although I still did (just not as frequently).

Thankfully (for you) I kept the original vgchartz.com bookmark on my browser toolbar, and continued to click on it daily.  Now that the vgchartz.com portion of the site looks more similar to what I was accustomed to, I am able to browse to the stories of interest.

I think the changes you made are for the good when looking for new users, but I believe each portion of the site(s) are fragmented, and the current user base found the portion of the site(s) that interested them and likely bookmarked that site as vgchartz.  You need to find a way to ensure that vgchartz.com is the jumping off point for current users.

My $0.02...hope that helps.

Now if you could just make if so I could click on the outer portions of the site for scrolling purposes, WITHOUT being taken to a site to order shirts, I'd be happy!

For me the news was a handy extra service.. I never came to vgchartz for the news.. I visit other sites for that.. what would help is if the left column (avatar, activity feed, settings etc) is always there for members.. on any of the sites.. it gives the members a central point on the sites.. makes you feel more connected to all of them..  the welcome nikkom on the top right isn't enough..

Another question - how do you all get to VGChartz at the start of the day? So you type "www.vgchartz.com" into the browser then click through to a thread, then just stick on gamrConnect (i.e using the gamrConnect menus) to browse the forums?

i just type "www.vgchartz.com" then i stay on the hub, i have the hot topics and the bar of news. gamrconnect gives us everything, they talk about news, you also can use it to know if sales data came in, because when they do a thread is created.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good
