It is only fundamentalist Muslims who find this acceptable. Unfortunately there are entire countries that are almost entire fundamentalist Muslims.

I imagine if the fundamentalist Christians had their own country gays and cheaters would at the very least be locked up, it's a problem with fundamentalism - not which religion the fundamentalists belong to.

The Taliban and other groups who share their extreme views many times don't take their laws from the Quran. Instead they take it from the collection of supposed qoutes of the Prophet; Sunni Muslims as an example follow the Sunnah.

These quotes are stupid as they were written down hundreds of years after the Prophet died as he forbade scribes from writing down anything he didn't say came directly from God, i.e. the Quran. On top of that, these quotes often contradict each other and especially the Quran itself.

Finally, the quotes vary widely depending on the religious views of that area. Saudi's and the Taliban believe in a very strict form of this that didnt' even exist 100 years ago and has gotten worse over time. Including using death penalty for so many things that the Quran doesnt mention.

In fact, death penalty in the Quran is only mentioned for treason and murder. In the case of treason it requires mutliple eye witnesses in good standing that can prove (not much different that today's policies) and in the case of murder its actually supposed to be the family of the victim who makes the choice if the murderer dies or not and that it is better to choose life as God is the most-forgiving and you should strive to be forgiving as well. In opposition to common thought, the Quran actually leans more to 'turning the cheek' than it does 'eye for an eye'.

I doubt it. While I haven't read the groups suggestions, I bet they don't want these types of grotesque laws that go against Quranic scripture.

This whole situation confuses me.

Sharia law is supposedly based on the Qur'an. And yet every Muslim I've ever met denies that Sharia law has anything to do with Islam.

Now, I can understand that not every Muslim would like Sharia law, just as not every Christian would follow the word of the Bible. Therefore, Sharia law doesn't prove that Islam is completely monstrous or any such thing. But if Sharia isn't from the Qur'an, then where is it from? Honest question.

Not quite that extreme. sharia4UK, though, would ban fictional television, X-Factor (because men and women mix in it), alcohol, all music, LoTR, Dracula and Twilight (hmm, maybe not so bad)

Which is the problem with most who push Quranic views out the door for Sunnah teachings. Well, it probably doesn't matter much as I'm sure no western nation would ever even consider these rules. Plus, its not so different from any massively conservative Christian groups here in the States. Imagine if the Amish controlled the laws in the US. While they don't go around killing others, they are extremists in their own beliefs and life in their community would equally suck balls and prevent continued growth for humanity.

And where are the 'moderates' muslim or [insert random religion] when you need them ? Staline had it all wrong. Religion is not opium, it's just a damn helluva cancer, disease, plague of humanity.
