FF6, 7, and 8 are the only ones I loved, though 10 and 4 are alright too. Although number 8 is actually my favourite - and one of my favourite RPGs of all time. I felt the story, characters, and setting, were head and shoulders better than any of the other games in the FF series. The only other game of that generation I liked as much as FF8 was Xenogears.
1. Don't waste time drawing magic, only draw GF's. Magic can be gained in much easier and faster ways, such as refining items and cards; almost all battles drop items, and you can buy them at the shop; there is a skill which will allow you to turn enemies into cards once they are damaged enough as well.
2. Junction system is very simple, you are over-analyzing it. Essentially you equip magic onto GFs, and then equip GFs onto characters, and equip special skills that come along with the GFs. It is a basic system with a couple of more levels to it; but it's not difficult.
3. When you don't want to fight battles, you can just use the Diablos skill "No Encounters" and then there will be no random encounters.
4. The story might seem a little strange because it has several plot threads instead of the usual simplistic fashion of FF stories. It is actually my favourite story in any videogame, although I really enjoyed Xenogears' as well.
5. The setting is largely steam-punk, similar to FF6, although it has some high tech stuff as well (like the Garden). The towns are the best in the series, there just aren't any others that compare.
6. There are way more extras in FF8 than any of the other FF games, ie. Selphie had a blog (years) before blogs were even around elsewhere - I didn't even find this until my latest playthrough earlier this year.
7. The side characters are more interesting too, even the ones with small roles. I also enjoy the mythology of FF8 more than the other FF games.
