Is 3D Already Dying?

Earlier today I reported on the unlikelihood that the next Batman movie will be in 3D. But is that a fluke or part of a trend? If box office numbers are any indication, it's definitely the latter.

Since the high-water mark of Avatar, where 71% of the revenue came from 3D screenings, numbers for big-budget 3D movies have plummeted to less than 50%. Obviously Avatar was a unique case in that it was basically sold as a 3D "experience," so if you saw it in 2D you were missing out. But then three months later the animated How to Train Your Dragon pulled in 68% of its revenue from 3D screens, hardly a significant drop-off.

Fast forward a mere four months and you have Despicable Me, another 3D animated kids movie, pulling in 45% of its revenue from 3D screens. As you can see by The Wrap's chart below, it's a pretty clear trend.

What's this mean? It means that now that people have had a chance to experience 3D in theaters, they're opting to spend $10 on a 2D screening rather than $15 on a 3D screening when given the option.

It's not great news for Hollywood studios that have sunk boatloads of money into 3D cameras and tech, but it's much, much worse news for consumer electronics companies such as Sony and Panasonic who are betting the farm on people wanting to upgrade two-year-old HDTVs to 3D HDTVs. But if Hollywood finds that making 3D movies isn't as profitable as they thought, they'll stop doing it. And without that content, no one will have any reason to buy a 3D TV.

Sucks for them, but it's good news for consumers who are voting with their wallets. No more inflated ticket prices and no need to buy a new TV for a feature no one ever really wanted? Sounds good to me. [The Wrap via Ebert] Send an email to Adam Frucci, the author of this post, at adam@gizmodo.com.

interesting...

lol there could be many reasons for this, but I'm betting it's not because 3d is dying anything over 40% is quite a nice amount percentage to be pulling in this early, not everyone can afford to go see a film in 3d every time one comes out and sometimes I'd much rather watch films that make good use of the technology.

I think 3d movies will pick up in revenues will pick up again come christmas.

it's the future of handheld

make the 3d movies cost the same or maybe $1 above  2d movies.  Then I'll watch movies in 3d.

My kids want to see Step up 3d, but i'm not gonna pay extra for that movie.

And Porn would be horrible in 3d.  Don't want to see a unit coming into my living room.

Worried about splash-back? :D

I have seen quite a few 3D movies recently and the ONLY time I have seen 3D done well is a 3D tech demo that I saw at an IMAX theatre.

You have to recognise that most of the movies coming after Avatar were not made initially with 3D in mind. Movies have to be made for 3D to have a good 3D effect.

Tease.

I am in the boat that thinks the ultimate success or failure depends largely on the world economy.

If the economy continues at the current pace where jobs are lost, while corporate profits rise due to restructuring, then the individual consumer will not have the disposable income to sustain the 3D industry as a whole. Individually, there will always be a market for iMax 3D movies at the middle and upper income ends, but the 3D televisions Sony and others are hocking will fail entirely and spectacularly because unemployment benefits will not cover the costs for a $3000 3D Sony television after you factor in food, housing, transportation and whatever the latest gadgets the kids want.

i am not "that" interested in 3d because I have already invested so much money in hd televisions, and I am not convinced that 3d tv will be a success so soon. eventually so called less expensive more reliable 3d tvs will be available.

The only 3D tech i will buy is the 3DS since it doesn't require glasses at all.

A good movie doesn't need "3D". And a bad movie (with bad screenplay/story)  will not be better with it (Avatar/Clash Of The Titans/Alice/....)

Stop with this crappy "3D" !
