But because Sony sold the PS3 hardware at a huge loss, they knew that they had to make the money back on games and accessories, so they scrapped the design. Gamers having to buy new controllers was better for their bottom line and therefore it makes perfect sense that they made Demons Souls the way it is.

Not just the consumers having to buy new accessories, but if thrown at the TV they had a good percentage of chance that they would buy a Sony product. So what you really have is even more cross over between their products.
