Forums - Gaming - The What If Topics... Halo never existed

Call of Duty 2 would have been more like the original.  Having health packs, larger maps, vehicles and overall just a better game.  Call of Duty 3 would not have been console exclusive.  PC games would actually give a rats ass about Modern Warfare 2.

Just a few examples of things that could have been.

The only difference I can think of between the current reality and this hypothetical alternate universe without Halo is that the other universe would still have cool FPS games that make you work to find health instead of just standing around like a jerk while it recharges.  I think that's the worst thing to happen to the genre honestly.  Now gamers get rewarded for standing still in video games.  I don't play games to stand still (except for certain parts of Wii Fit).  What a joke.

yeah because backtracking through a level with low health on the lookout for a healthpack is so much more fun...

Glad those times changed.

and you have absolutely no idea about the CoD franchise.

United Offensive had the big maps and vehicles. That was made by Treyarch and had nothing to do with the original.

Besides that Halo had vehicles. Pretty laughable that you think CoD2 has no vehicles because of Halo.

Furthermore many people already think that CoD2 is better than CoD.

The Xbox Brand would be dead.

Console Online Gaming would be Far behind.

Atto Suggests...:

Book - Malazan Book of the Fallen series

Game - Metro Last Light

TV - Deadwood

Music - Forest Swords

If Halo didn't exist, Microsoft (games division) would have been struggling right now. Reach could possibly be the last Halo game in the franchise now, that Bungie is with Activision.

You are aware the first Halo had healthpacks, right?

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

You beat me to it...

They're in ODST and Reach too.

I'll agree with this somewhat, except that i'm not opposed to recharging health on principle, just that i find it jarring when recharging health breaches with plausibility. Like in the old Goldeneye vs. the new Goldeneye. In the old Goldeneye, you got shot and that damage was permanent. You could layer some body armor over it, but that was the beginning and end of it. The mechanics were a little wonky, but far more realistic than the new goldeneye, where i could get shot 400 times in a level, but if i timed them out right, still end with 100% health, and the cause of that lies squarely at the feet of Halo, though i don't blame Halo necessarily, because with the Spartan armor and such, recharging health made a lot of damn sense, but now every FPS hero is mysteriously Wolverine.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I'm with yo_john117 and Cross-X.  Without Halo: CE I probably wouldn't have gotten involved very heavily in gaming.

It is a simple FACT that the FPS genre on consoles would be way smaller and we would have never seen games like Killzone 2, Modern Warfare, Resistance, and others.  The list of developers around the world who agree with this is massive.

Ken Levine who created Bioshock and is an amazing developer, said himself that without Bungie and Halo Bioshock could have never happened.
