Forums - Nintendo - Aonuma Confirms Zelda is Not the Skyward Sword

Princess present but not in weapon form

Just in: not Zelda

Ever since the very first piece of teaser artwork was produced for Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword – long before it was even known as Skyward Sword, even – there's been discussion of who or what the sword would be. Eiji Aonuma has confirmed the sword does have a personality but you can rule out one possibility: it's not Princess Zelda.

Stating that the sword itself is the driving force behind Link's next adventure, Mr Aonuma says:

When that sword is actively guiding Link it actually transforms into a feminine figure. I wouldn't say that it's female per se but it's a feminine figure. It would be kind of nice to keep this a mystery, but I can tell you right now that it is not Zelda.

That's one theory down, 2,000 to go. With there being a relative lack of memorable feminine figures in Zelda history other than the princess, this could even be a brand new character to the series. Or could it be a returning face from old? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

It's going to be a new character.

It's gonna be a new character that's Midna-like.

Midna was cool.

What? There are tons! More than male figures, too. The 3 creator goddesses Din, Nayru and Farore, sages like Saria, Nabooru and Ruto, Impa, who is a recurring character as well, the oracles from the Oracle GB Zelda games, there's Tetra, Midna, Navi, Malon, Marin, the entire Gerudo tribe, Aryll and Link's grandmother from WW, Medli, also from WW (she even accompanies you through an entire dungeon), Tatl (Link's fairy companion from MM), heck - even Epona's feminine.
