Forums - Microsoft - Does it matter if Kinect works right?

Uh....can we please stay on topic guys.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Ok back on topic here... Good thread. Im personally of the wait and see mindset on Kinect, both for myself and in terms of thinking about sales.

lol, me too, as far as its success goes. However, I think that the things I've mentioned about how the device works are kind of like game reviews. Casuals don't care about them. If they think it's fun, they'll buy it, and it is aimed directly at them. That said, again, I have to wait and see if it's a success. Since the device is not meant for me, I have no investment in its success or failure, and I won't be buying it, however I think it will outperform the move if casual gamers are at all a deciding factor.

I will probably buy Kinect just for Child of Eden.

I disagree, cansual gamers are basically the kind that got their hands on a 1-2 year old gen console and some games and basically leave it for 5-10 years before the wii but since the wii has already got them to buy that I don't see them buying kinect on top of wii especially since it really doesn't do much better then the wii and the wii is cheaper

That would be stupid, since it's a rail shooter and you don't need kinect to play it, it's kinect enabled not exclusive (as in you can use the controller, and as in it's on the ps3)

Thank you for your input, but I knew that already. The PS3 is my primary console for multiplats (I bought my 360 last week and will only buy exclusives for it), BUT if Child of Eden turns out to be the one game which really shows the potential of Kinect, I will make an exception an buy CoE for 360 and Kinect just for this one game (like I bought all my gaming systems just for one game initially - Civ 4, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Kirby Power Paintbrush, Lumines, The Last Guardian, Mass Effect).

I don't see how a rail shooter will show the potential of Kinect, but whatever

I think its got enough good looking software and good enough gimmicks to at least gain the attention of a wide population of people. $299 is good enough value for the new adopters as from my perspective most people aren't so stupid as people here imagine and they do factor in the cost of controllers, memory cards or whatever when they purchase consoles especially as the price is high enough for people to at least take care when making the purchase. The main issue for me is the $149 price tag may be too high for core adopters who will see less value, although theres always the possibility there will be a price cut within the next 6 months to solve it.

THAT is what the Kinect is. It's a new thing to grab the public-casual interest. It has games they can play. It is new and different. The specifics don't matter to them. They would never know the difference. To them, it's a toy. They are barely invested in it. To us, it's a way of life.

I think there is one reason why Kinect will eventually best Move. Move isn't a new thing meant to grab the public-casual interest. Move is a new version of an existing thing meant to improve upon the original.

this is where your whole argument fails imo. (edit: well not the argument just that I feel you are addressing the wrong problem) You, Microsoft and anyone else who is trying to promote Kinect for one reason or another either miss or ignore the one little fact that could make all the difference.

The fact that Kinect isn't original and is based on technology that has failed to deliver in the past. the problem with Kinect is not just the technical issues, but what it can actually do. if Microsoft can deliver on the games that they showed at e3 2009. if Microsoft can deliver an interface that is as natural and responsive as buttons, if Microsoft can get it's technology not just to enhance upon what its predecessor's have shown in the past but also overcome it's problems then I will accept that Kinect will win but from what was shown at e3 2010 this is not the case.

The technology can be hyped up to appear new and revolutionary but if it meets the same problems as it's predecessor'S and does not deliver on it's promises then the hype will only keep it going for so long. I hope Microsoft can pull this of because I loved the ps eye (ps3) and it's tech when it was released and nothing would please more in seeing this technology actual work the way Microsoft and Sony both demonstrated but I just don't see that happening :(

move has solved this problems by taking a step back and including the thing I and anyone who has interest in this technology was trying to get away from (but now seems to be where I was trying to get to), buttons. To me it makes a camera interface better than my wildest dreams could possible have came dreamt up.

it's on implementation where it matters most and we will have to wait for the releases to fully determine there fate, but I have and will enjoy learning what I can about them until then and after.

correct me if I am wrong
stop me if I am bias
I love a good civilised debate (but only if we can learn something).
