Forums - Sales - TheSource comments on Sony's shipment figures

I don't get why anybody is treating this as new information.  It's been like this for a while now.  A long while.  As Ioi stated a long time ago.  It's likely Sony is counting something else in with it's shipped sales.  Like replacement numbers.

Afterall it's not like it's JUST Vgchartz that it's at odds with.   It's at odds with EVERY major tracker.

It'd be dishonest or just wishful thinking to think it's anything else.  These were the people who's shipped used to meant "sitting in our warehouses."

Actually their shipped was sold to retailers but still sitting in our warehouses

Not according to their own financial reports.  I'd suggest taking a look at them.  The "our" comment is amusing though.  Either you identify too much with sony or you need to re-read the financial reports.   If the age of 20 is true... i'm guessing it's the later... unless you work at a Sony Style store or something.

All the major trackers are in perfect harmony.  Just like they were before Sony switched their reporting methods.

If the major trackers were in the wrong... Sony would speak up about it.  They woudl say "Our consumer sell through is much better then everbody else says... and here is why."

The fact that they don't and are still silent just like when the previous gaps were there shows it's all in the reporting method and that it's likely still different from the other two.

It's really basic common sense.  Anything else is pure wishfull thinking.  Which... using "our"... no offense, but it does clearly demonstrate your lack of objectivity.  Treating Sony as if it were a baseball team.

dude I copied what you said and added more detail (the fact it was sold to retailers, as in paid for) as for Sony not speaking out against trackers, I honestly don't think they give a shit after it leaves their warehouse and is paid for especially outside of japan

It doesn't seem like the install base charts factor in broken consoles that have been replaced (as in owner buying a new console)

Still doesn't respond because Xbox360 having more console base, overships less than half units than PS3.

My point is ask Sony because our data is perfectly in line with GFK, ChartTrack and so on which is the data everyone else uses. So the options are as follows:

  • Sony has some kind of strange intricacy to their tracking which "inflates" their numbers vs sell-through
  • There are an enormous amount of PS3s being sold through channels or in countries that aren't trackable
  • VGChartz, GFK, NPD, Media Create etc etc are all significantly undertracking PS3 sales but not any other console in the regions covered

Personally I think it is a combination of the first (mainly) and second options. Since our EMEAA data takes into consideration regions like Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Korea, Russia, India, Middle East, South Africa so I can't really see which other major missing markets could be remaining unless 1m PS3s were sold in Egypt last year or something...

I trust the site but we're not actually in line with gfk in Australia and NZ.

ioi, could you please check this post I made on another thread and confirm or deny if what I wrote is correct?

AFAIK, and if wrong please correct me, there is a small but important difference between what Sony considers sold, and what MS or Nintendo considers sold. If I'm not mistaken, Sony considers a PS3 sold when they receive the order, but MS or Nintendo provide the number of consoles not in their hands anymore. This could explain that bigger difference between Sony numbers and VGC numbers, than between MS or Nintendo numbers and VGC numbers.

I don't know in the console world, but in networking devices, there is a 4 weeks delay between your order and when the product leaves the manufacturing plant. This 4 weeks delay could explain that difference.

problem with that it's that if sony was overshipping, they should have dropped eventually by a lot by now, the thing we getting the same for 3 quarters now, sony not overshipping.

reason because 360 shipments were low before 150$ arcade clerance sales and 360s

50-100k in Australia isn't going to make a massive difference but there may be a point in that we're obviously not counting the free PS3s that were given away in the Bravia deal (nor any other promotion in any other country).

As for Sony counting a sale when the receive an order rather than when units leave the door - I'm not honestly sure whether this is the case or not but even if it was it shouldn't make that much of a difference - might account for 2-3 weeks of extra units I guess...

What matters to me is comparing apples to apples which is what we're doing - exactly the same techniques are used to put together our data for all consoles so if it works and lines up well for Nintendo and Microsoft then it should for Sony as well. If not, then the discrepancy / difference / alternative definition seems to be on their side not ours.

50k-100k in australia would be a good start.
