Forums - Microsoft - ToysRUs cancels Kinect preorders that used 40% coupon

As a follow up to our story last week on pre-ordering Kinect from Toys R Us for $89, we've got some bad news.  They have begun sending out order cancellation notices to those that were able to pre-order the Xbox 360 accessory before Toys R Us restricted the code from being able to use it with Kinect.

As we mentioned in the original article, this isn't too surprising as retailers are apt to cancel orders when mistakes like this are made.  However, the good news is that those that had their pre-order canceled get a $10 off coupon code.

You can check out the full text of the cancellation notice below.

Very unfortunate for those who thought they were grabbing a Kinect for only $89.99.

this looks like the is not much of a margin for retailers in kinect

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

They probably saw how many people were interested and decided to cancel the existing orders and jack up the price.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

Pity it wasn't Amazon, they generally honour these things.

how so?

They are loosing enough money to justify cancelling the orders of their customers, which mean they have a low margin on it. Low margin is common pratice in video games anyway.

Yeah, I think you are right. MS most likely expects to make the bigger part of profits out from the extras - accessories and games. Much like Apple sells iPods at very low margin and make up for it on headphones etc.

You're really grasping at straws.  I would be willing to be this really was just an error.

These things happen all the time, they just usually aren't on a large scale or that big (nearly half off, at launch!) so it's pretty understandable the cancelled those.

For some reason, this makes me really happy... since I missed out on the deal.. ~_n

I was talking of toy r us having a low margin not microsoft. Sure it was obviously an error, but no companies cancel orders unless they loose enough money to justify it. Low margin for retailers on Video games is common practice, nothing related to kinect itself. Wheres the grasping as straws?!?!

:(  Got me e-mail earlier today.  Unfortunately, I am probably not gonna pick up Kinect until a game comes out that I am interested in.  twesterm, its up to you guys :)
