nielson accounts for 40% of the market.... can you understand the numbers now ?

So Br sales are past 2 million.

Does it really matter?

If the best selling movies are hovering around 100,000 units it is unlikely that more than 200,000 or 300,000 PS3 owners are buying Blu-Ray movies, thus my statement that most PS3 owners have never bought a Blu-Ray movie is (likely) correct. It also means that current sales of HD movies are well under 5% (probably close to 2.5%) of DVD sales.

At the same time it was commented on in January that Blu-Ray had passed HD-DVD in total movie sales yet (when this data was collected, obviously months later) Blu-Ray has not really gained much of a lead; certainly the biggest titles have sold more on Blu-Ray but it is possible that HD-DVD has a smaller (more dedicated) userbase.

your statement is likely WRONG.

I got a PS3 and 2 BR movies..... Both have their hardcore fans that buy almost anything, differance is BR already has casual movie buyers.

Why do you think Br outsold hddvd 9-2 ?.....

Br sales were below hddvd without the PS3... but with the PS3 they are now 9-2!..... are you missing the connection ? is it so hard to see, seriously.

Look at the sales spike one week after PS3 is released.

I'm not sure whether you're reading comprehension is bad or if you simply ignore what people say ...

Don't mind Hus.. I figure he actually doesn't even know how to read... he just writes and writes...

dont forget the dvd XD

10 -1 vs bluray

i think the bluray or hddvd dont be a natural successor for the dvd, like the dvd to the vhs

Bluray is for HD tvs...It's HD. DVD won't go out unless the majority of people get an hD-TV.

every tv sold now is HDTV...

Go into most stores and 20% to 40% of the tvs are SDTV's. I have seen many people buying SDTV's not just based on their price and reliability but to them HDTV is just to much.

you should probably tell your customers about the switch to a digital signal in 2009. Most SDTVs still dont support digital signals.

all new tvs are required to have digital tuners.

Well the totals according Nielsen VideoScan are 844,000 to 708,600 which gives Blu-Ray 54.36%  and HD-DVD 45.64% of the Market; even if they only have 40% of the data the sample size is large enough to say that Blu-Ray has about 55% Marketshare while HD-DVD only has 45% market share. Now in January Blu-Ray sales passed HD-DVD sales because of the release of the PS3 yet Blu-Ray has not extended its lead which implies that both formats have been selling at roughly the same rate since January.

I'll keep the rest simple for you so you'll understand ... Imagine you're a store owner and you had sold 20 gum balls to 15 customers that came into your store; one customer bought 10 gum balls, one customer bought 5 gum balls, two customers bought 2 gum balls and another customer bought 1 gum ball. Now being that 5 of the 15 customers who came into your store bought gum balls would you say that most of your customers bought gumballs that day?

Now, it is likely that sales of Blu-Ray follow a similar pattern to that of the gum balls in my previous example; a small portion of PS3 owers are likely going to buy a large bulk of the movies and then you're going to have a slightly larger portion of owner who buy the rest.

More news on the topic - there was also a news story about HD-DVD outselling BluRay in Europe (but I can't find it...): http://www.gametab.com/news/868190/ "Recent high-def disc releases (like Blu-ray editions of 'Casino Royale') have indicated solid sales. Now, however, a new Sony research report sees some alarmingly low sales figures for other titles issued on next-gen formats (thanks Slashdot)." ... "While these charts confirm the previously reported strong showings for such A-list titles as 'The Departed' 'Batman Begins' and 'Superman Returns' (with each clocking per-format sales totals since-inception of at least 28,000 units sold), they also demonstrate a very steep drop-off for titles outside of that top rung, with even discs among the top-ten best sellers that week moving fewer than 1000 units apiece..."

Did you use gum balls so that Hus could understand?

I do not believe it is sane to argue against videoscan and soundscan, they are damn accurate for what they track but what about the volume of the stores that they do not track?

http://videobusiness.com/article/CA6427994.html

I missunderstood the sales/shipped (damn sony) but they still sold more than 50% of the total shipped.

"

At a Blu-ray event at the CES, Mike Dunn, president worldwide of News Corp.'s (NWS) Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, said he believed Blu-ray will outsell HD DVD.

By the end of the first quarter of 2007, he projected Blu-ray sales to be three to four times higher than HD's.

"By the end of the first quarter, the format war is over," he said, noting Sony's recently released PlayStation 3 game console with a Blu-ray drive had boosted sales.

"I'm selling 70,000 discs a week. Sales are doubling every week. ... Average PS3 owners buy 6 discs," he said."

 http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,242599,00.html

This was at CES 2007, obviously the ratios must have been different at the time but it must go to show that PS3 owners are actually buying blu-ray's.

Well, it all depends on what he was really saying and how they're making their projections ...

If he is saying that "PS3 owners who have bought Blu-Ray discs have (on average) bought 6 discs" he could very well be correct and it would demonstrate that (approximately) 10% of PS3 owners had bought Blu-Ray movies. On the other hand if he meant that "The average PS3 owner had bought 6 Blu-Ray movies" he would be lying.

Yeah, I don't see him meaning all PS3 owners have purchased 6 discs on average. That's a retarded statement. Not all PS3 owners even own an HDTV. I have purchased 4 movies but only when they have good deals on amazon or buy.com I've spent $58 total on the 4 movies which is competitive with DVD prices.

"implies that both formats have been selling at roughly the same rate since January.." bahahahahhah.

Look at the chart i posted. Can you comprehand it ?...... apperantly not, so.

In Jan.. hddvd at around 50k.. in March around 50k

In Jan.. Br at around 90k........ in March around 260k

can you see the lead extending now, LOL.

 lol gum ball BS, average!!!

It's obvious that the release of the PS3 has seriously helped the sales of Blu-Ray discs, but I doubt that people that have bought a PS3 would be buying loads of Blu-ray discs.  People that own a PS3 will only buy a Blu-Ray disc if they have an HD TV also, those with an HD TV are only likely to buy one or two Blu-Ray discs at the moment.

Anyway, the sales at the moment show that Blu-Ray is leading HDDVD by 55% to 45% which really isn't much, but don't forget that HDDVD discs were on the market at least a month before Blu-Ray and Blu-Ray player prices are much more expensive than HDDVD player prices.

I think we will be able to gauge the format war better in a few months when we see sales comparisons.

But at the moment I would say that Blu-Ray holds the advantage and if they can get the costs of the players down significantly and the PS3 is reduced anytime soon, then Blu-Ray could run away with it before it's really started.
