Forums - Sales - Apple posts another quarter of record revenues

Seriously, android phones are the biggest competition that the Iphone has ever had, and are really catching up with the amount of apps and whatnot to add.  If google tried harder, they could take apple to town in a hot minute.

Also, apple is going to be losing a bit of marketshare now that windows 7 is getting good reviews, and people stop having vista as a reason to migrate over.

Even with the Ipad, android pads are expected to really give them some competition.  So, i'm betting that we'll see a big down grade in apple profit a year from now.    2 categories:  Iphone and PC sales show a lot of losing potential.  1 shows potential to lose as well: Ipad.

I'm going to short apple with my play money, mabey 6-700

Without a doubt, Android is growing faster than iPhone right now. But smartphones in general are a rapidly growing market, so Apple could tread water in marketshare and still see their bottom line swell. Realistically, what's going to happen is that iPhone and Android both continue to erode Nokia and Blackberry marketshare as they have for the past few years. Windows Phone 7 is a bit of a wildcard, here, but there's really no evidence that iPhone sales are slowing or will slow in the forseeable future.

This goes double for the iPad. It's a market that will grow rapidly in the next few years, and Apple is racing ahead with no concrete sign of a serious competitor in sight right now. Android will likely seize a good chunk of the tablet market eventually, but the growth of the market itself will fill Apple's coffers, even if they don't end up with a majority share in the end.

As for the Mac, it grew 33% YoY during a period when the PC market in general grew 22%. Mac sales have outpaced PC market growth for the past 17 quarters, including the past 3 quarters when WIndows 7 has been available.

You can do what you want with your money, of course, but I just can't see all these weaknesses in Apple's business that you are seeing.

The PC market grew 33% yoy because people are getting pissed off about vista.  That problem is solved and windows 7 is getting rave reviews.   Android phones are rapidly becoming competitive with the Iphone, and in fact will soon be eclipsing the Iphone because apple's biggest strength is its apps.   But the Android phones are a close 2nd and will be ahead of Apple within a year or two in terms of apps created (though I do realize that there are a backlog of Iphone apps available).

So imho, that's 2 products that apple will be losing market share on, and you can probably tell that i'm a pretty aggressive growth type of investor, always have been.

Around the Network

Well, people have been calling the death of Apple since the beginning of time. Seems like the more death of Apple talk there is, the stronger Apple gets. So keep on doubting.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Hell no.. making apps for Android is hell:

Incompatible os versions.. (our 1.5 app wasn't compatible with 1.6... and 2.1 and 2.2 )
Incompatible hardware.. no minimum specs
And no control from google.. any idiot can make an Android app... in februari there was this company releasing 100's of list of quotes and facts.. spamming up the market place...

and most important: money..

60 percent of the Android Market is free while 25 against the Appstore... so for every paid app you can find a free app
the ad supported apps are making 1/7 th of their iPhone counterpart
24 hour return policy... it's not official but it's estimated 40 percent of the apps is "brought back"
piracy... -edit I removed my example-
keeping up to make compatible apps for every freaking phone and OS ain't cheap...

you must understand that the iPhone buyers aren't the same as Android buyers.. Iphone buyers choose for an iphone and the appstore while most Android buyers don't.. they spend an hell of a less time on the android market place..

Soon android and apple are going to be the dominant phone OS's.  Do you not think that app developers won't be churning out apps for the android phones?  Also, keep in mind that Android apps are a new thing.

Also, according the wall street journal, android phones are outselling the Iphone, so the apps wont be far behind:

btw, grimes, i'm not predicting the "death" of apple at all.  I'm merely saying that because it is facing much tougher competition for two of its products, and because tougher competition usually results in a decline in marketshare, that it will be losing marketshare and ultimately profits because of this.   I'm calling my broker next week on an option trade and it looks like I have a decent chance of winning.  : ))

You're assuming Apple is stuck in it's current markets and can't improve. Apple has shown that it can develop new markets and refresh its existing products like no other company can.

I would say the current market size of the smartphone market is such that any one player who is able to bring it to the mass market level in terms of refinement and price can still take the lions share of the market. That means that players like RIM, Symbian, Android, and Win Mobile all have a decent shot if they can get their act together.

No and I mean real apps not those apps for free which my 10 year old neighbour kids made... Android Paid apps aren't avaible worldwide for both users and developers.. (serious google wtf is up with that...) Not a lot people are actually buying Androids apps.. Google is incapable of promoting to buy apps.. lots of users demand free apps cause that's the way it started..

Sure the amount of apps may surpass the iphones.. because everybody can release one.. but really making money from it? hell no.. so the real developers will go where the money is and that's the appstore..

“Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android nobody is making significant revenue,"
