Forums - Gaming - Shaping the exciting future of MMOs.

I'm not a big MMO player. I've tried to get into WoW and Lord of the Rings Online and a few free MMOs as well, but the only "MMO" that has ever held my attention for a longer period of time is Guild Wars, which isn't even classified as a full MMO.

I'm very excited about where MMOs are headed though. Huge games like Star Wars: The Old Republic and Final Fantasy XIV are going further away from the established WoW-model than most other big MMOs have done to date, while focusing on bringing a great story to the player as well. The story is the greatest high point for The Old Republic for me at least, and if it lives up to BioWare's promises, I might have to buy a subscription just to play through some of all that delicious story.

Even further away from established MMO traditions, is Guild Wars 2. It is breaking with a lot of standards in MMO play, and is the game that will set the gameplay standard for MMOs for years to come I'd wager. Gone are the traditional stereotypes of tanks, healers and DPS (the game doesn't even have a dedicated healing class!), gone are the exclamation-mark-wall-of-text quests of old and gone are the concepts of kill and loot stealing.

Guild Wars 2 alone has me psyched for the games to come, but I have high hopes for the Old Republic as well. What about you?

Final Fantasy XIV on day one.

Not to troll TOR. But I don't like what I have seen so far. To me it is just abusing the Star Wars name.

...Guild Wars 2 sounds nice as well.

I haven't watched a lot of gameplay, I'm mostly going off developer interviews with SWTOR, so my opinion could change. We'll see.

Is no one else excited about the future of MMOs?

Wagram, you can add me and rutea7 to that list.

But we're still undecided on what system we'll be playing the game (In my case, maybe both PC and PS3, just for convenience and collection purpose.).

Sure! Great too hear that you folks will be playing as well.

This, and many other quotes has gotten me really hyped for GW2

"You acquire traits by completing profession challenges scattered throughout the world. For instance, you walk into an inn and persuade a shadowy stranger into telling you a rumor about a mysterious tome full of arcane knowledge. Or you challenge a legendary swordmaster to a duel while exploring Divinity's Reach.

Each profession focuses on different activities to develop his or her traits. Warriors train physically, bash stuff, eat stuff, and drink stuff. Elementalists, on the other hand, seek ancient knowledge locked in tomes or particularly powerful elemental locations. The different trait challenges accentuate the unique feel of that profession and really bring the experience of playing that profession to life."

Fuck yea, no abstract weird system that makes no sense like in FFVIII. MMO makers try to make it feel like you really have the profession you have.

There are so many quotes from the guys working on GW2 that reveals just how much they 'get it' that it's not even funny. They are making GW2 just for me^^

I LOVE ICELAND!

I know what you mean, the game is going to be scary good! :D

Get back in the official thread, I can't keep it alive alone.

I really think GW2 will be the standard for future MMOs to aim for. Everything ArenaNet reveals about the game is grander, better and more fun than what we are used to.

Try EVE Online. You'll see what true PVP means when you fly along with/against thousands of people in endless wars through the years, all on one server. A very rewarding, time sucking helluva game, if you can go through its very long learning curve and its sheer complexity.

Is there a MMO out or coming out that has better graphics than XIV?
