Forums - Sony - Tarsier Studios become first-party SCE developer

Tarsier Studios has signed an exclusive first party deal with Sony Computer Entertainment Europ

Following our recent announcements of our continued relationship with SCEE and Media Molecule now comes the following great news.

Tarsier Studios has signed an exclusive first party deal with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. Together with SCEE, Tarsier Studios will bring their high quality visuals and entertainment talent to the ever growing SCEE game portfolio in the form of a yet to be announced project.

By joining the SCEE family of first party exclusive developers, Tarsier Studios takes the next, natural step towards becoming one of Scandinavia's top developers. A new office will be established in Malmö this fall, and the company is expected to grow to around 40 people within a year.

Since the unveiling of 'The City of Metronome' at E3 2005, Tarsier Studios has gone on to work on projects with several leading studios and publishers in the gaming industry, quickly becoming an established and well respected developer and provider of high quality products and services. With the release of 'Rag Doll Kung Fu™ : Fists of Plastic', Tarsier showed its talent for creating highly entertaining and visually stunning games. Since then Tarsier has continued their relationship with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe by helping out with the famed LittleBigPlanet™ franchise and other projects, indicating an exciting future for the Swedish game developer.

I hope Sony allow them to finish off The City of Metronome and at least give it a PSN release.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

Cool, I'm looking forward to seeing more from them. Honestly, the only fault with Rag Doll Kung-fu on PSN was the price, it's a fun game.

yeah and only wireless sixaxis, I for now have only 2 wireless, with one not working properly (not from sony) but I'm getting a new this week.

Anyhow, so these guys make content for LBP?? awesome! if they already did the one for LBP1 then I have nothing to complain about!

If you ask me, this generation is pure awesomeness for Sony-playstation-users, because sony has to catch up to the others and look what we get! (not only this here :P)

Ditto. That game looked amazing.

I hope they've signed a deal for a new IP, and aren't just working on other SCEE projects like they were before. The OP makes it sound as if that is the case, given the status quo has certainly changed.  I agree that The City of Metronome looked crazy awesome, andI would like to see what these guys are really capable of.

I gotta say, SCEE have really stepped their game up this gen.  They've thus far bought Guerrilla Games, Evolution Studios, and Media Molecule, plus signed deals with Quantic Dream and Tarsier Studios.  In terms of internal studios, they've grown from four to seven, actually passing up SCEA to become Sony's largest development arm (as they only have six studios).

I believe Sony is the largest and most diverse development arm in the European region at the moment.  They definitely have a stronger presence in the UK than any other development house, given they have six studios in that country alone.

Another first party to the already solid line up for Sony....and I agree with above SCEE is really stepping up their game and I think like with MM (they announced LBP2 right after if I remember correctly) we will see the 'reason' they acquired this team at GC

I don't believe they acquired the team.  They just signed a deal with the team for a new first party title.

While they had grown from three to seven this generation (bigBig Studios was a subsidiary of Evolution Studios, and acquired at the same time), they essentially folded back into six when Studio Liverpool and Evolution Studios merged into one studio.  They still have distinct teams (and logos), but they're not full separate studios, they share management/resources, they're soon going to share a building and a lot of redundant staff was let go.

Also worth noting, the deal with Quantic Dream doesn't give them IP ownership.  It's more similar to Microsoft's previous deals with Oddworld Inhabitants (Munch's Odyssey), Sega (Shenmue II), Epic Games (Gears of War, Shadow Complex), Remedy (Alan Wake) or Crytek (Kingdoms).  Or Sony's own previous deals with Universal (Crash, Spyro).

rag doll kung fu wasn't bad but not great either.  I hadn't heard of metronome before but the images look pretty cool.  all in all i'm all for more sony first party developers but i would be much more excited to see sony snatch up quantic dream.  i'm still kind of annoyed that they let insomniac go multiplat.
